external fuel pump on 88 GL-1500

Postby pugetsoundsailer » Wed Nov 18, 2015 12:24 pm

Just picked up a 88 GL1500, first one I've worked one, anyway while dealing with removing all the old gas from the tank I discover the in tank fuel pump, or is it? After doing some research I discover that it wasn't a stock pump and that it was actually a external fuel pump. I saw the same model being sold on ebay as a replacement to convert the bike to an external pump like the older wingers, I also saw the internal replacement pumps but this is not one of them.

It wouldn't turn on while it was in the tank, even though there was power to it but after pulling it and going directly to the battery it runs................

Has anyone rigged there bike with one of these units ?

man just got the pump out and you know the points for this pump are not sealed just a plastic dust cap with a vent so they were exposed and actually submerged in the gas, WTF !!! This can't have ever worked and if it would have sparked inside that tank when it was empty and full of fumes you've got a bomb............

here's a pic of the pump that was in the tank when I bought the bike. Anyway I ordered a NAPA P72190 ( new # is E8371 ) for the bike.

The picture of that first pump looks like the external pump I had on another bike. It kept giving me problems and the local dealer wanted what I thought was way too much for a new one. (About $248 if I remember right.)
I replaced it with a low pressure electric fuel pump I bought at O'Reilly's for about $65.00. Worked like a charm as long as I remembered to turn it on.
