Thinking bout a 1988 Wing

Postby TallyMike » Thu Nov 19, 2015 8:36 am

Good Morning Everyone,
New Member here, and I'm looking at an older (1988) Wing with 29,000 miles on it. I currently have a '09 1300 Honda VTX, a very different beast. I have always thought that I wanted a big touring bike and I can get this one for under $3000, so if I'm making a mistake, it won't be a huge one. My questions to y'all are:
What sort of issues should I look for on this bike?
Any peculiarity for this model year?
I plan to have the dealer go over it before I buy - Anything I should ask them to check for?
If I do buy it, I'll of course change all the fluids and do a service. Tires are new, so that's one good thing.
Any and all onions welcomed
Cheers!
TallyMike

I also owned an 05 VTX 1300 R, great bike and fun to ride but I wanted to get back on a wing.
A lot dealers will not work on Wing over 10 years old. Have you already found one that will?
The 88 & 89 Wings had a hesitation from take off, that is fixed by a 5 or 10 degree trigger wheel. Besides the regular maintenance stuff you should see when and if the following was completed
Fork oil change
Timing belts replaced
Drive shaft removed and lubed
Sub and cruise filter replaced
Air filter
The dealer can see if the fuel filter and brake pads are good. All years are pretty much bullet proof if regular service is completed.
Check the boot on the right air shock it is probably torn from just it's age.

The local dealer will at least go over it for a pre purchase inspection. I have a pretty good relationship with them, so they treat me right. The bike does have some service records, not sure how complete they are.
The X ain't going nowhere - I need something to embarrass the Harleys with :D

Couldnt get rid of my X either.

29K on an '88 means it has done a bunch of sitting. If thats been inside, then it should look pretty good. But as was said, theres a bunch of maintenance to get caught up on.
In that price range, Ive seen several mid '90s models. Granted, they mostly have 60-80k or more on the clock. There were small upgrades every year or 2. Not saying theres anything wrong with an '88, I dont think there is.

88 & 89 had the hesitation issue mentioned. It was a recall item and some bikes had it fixed. I think dealers were supposed to indicate this on the frame with an X. The other thing to watch for is timing belts. If you dont know when they were replaced its a good idea to just replace them anyways. Belts aren't expensive and its not too bad a DIY job. Everything else is maintenance you can do yourself. I'd ask the dealer to see if he can verify that the bike did have the hesitation issue fixed and that everything works on the bike. Good luck. :D
