The prevailing wind, or is something else going on with my 97 SE?

I am a very experienced rider but new to the Wing and lately I mostly ridden around town and never
notice this on a short ride running errands, etc. But, after being on the highway at highway speed
for a while and then slow down, I have noticed this a couple of times now.

When I slow down to say 30MPH to go through a small town, the bike seems to wonder around and not track straight like a car would wonder if there was slack in the steering.
However the front wheel is tight and round and tire has maybe a couple of thousand miles on it.
Steering seems tight with no play. I am running about 33 PSI as recommended in the manual.

It has the Tulsa Tall shield and I have thought that maybe it is extra sensitive to the wind or maybe I was over
controlling it since I came from a VStar. When I get back up to speed it seems fine.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I have a 99 aspencade and it I have no wonder at any speed. I can almost come to a stop with no wonder. I would check the bearings wheel and steering head bearings. I would also check the shocks.

Best to run at least 40 PSI in the rear and minimum of 39 up front.
I usually run 43 rear and 41 front. You'll notice a difference in the handling, as it becomes 'crisper'.
Also, I found the OEM Dunlop K177s up front horrible as they want to follow every little tar snake/groove etc!

33 PSI is way to low for the front tire. Honda recommends that so the ride is softer and the tires wear sooner so you can buy more tires. Put about 38 - 40 PSI in the front tire and see how it handles. Also what kind of tire is on the front and is it wearing evenly? How many miles are on your bike? I think once you increase the air pressure your problem will be gone.
I have a 97 SE also, I have Dunlop E3's front & rear and run 38 front and 40 rear, handles great, no wobble of vibration at any speed

Awesome info to know! Thanks guys I will pump them up some tomorrow. It had Dunlops on it when I got it a few weeks ago. They are still good for several more thousand miles. They are about 4 years of calendar time though.

Avon Venoms and run 42psi front/43psi rear. The higher pressure in the front really helped with low speed handling. I can notice right away when the tire gets down to 40 just by the way she handles. Large bike really squarsh the tires a lot. When I first got my bike I think the OP was running around 33psi up front and the tires were cupped. It was like trying to steer a drunken buffalo :D

Okay my theory now is that it's the tires. Under inflated on a big bike, big boy and i have only noticed it after a cruise at hwy speed long enough to heat up the tires. Maybe they get a little softer when they are warmed up and that is what I am noticing?
Worth exploring anyway.

replace those tires, they look better than they actually are and run the new tire at the pressure recommended by the guys not honda

The first few times I rode my 1500 I noticed it wondering at low speed. I thought it was just me.
It was only wondering while trying to ride in a straight line. When I get it all back together, I'll make sure my tire pressures are up before I leave th he shop.

I pumped up the tires this weekend and rode about 200 miles. It did handle better overall.
The slow speed "wondering" was better but not totally eliminated so it must be a tire issue.
I only notice it after a cruise of 30 minutes or so. (I am assuming to heat the tires up?)
For instance, when I start out with cold tires or just running to the grocery store, it tracks straight and true.
I guess new tires are on the agenda for the near future.
May look into the dark side. I noticed a thread on 1500 darkside somewhere recently.
The bike runs better and better the more I ride it.
I was riding with friends and was late leaving an intersection. I really leaned into the
left turn onto the highway and hammered it pretty good and the rear tire actually broke loose and left
some rubber. That was a new one. haha

Darkside is an interesting option for sure. Have read a lot about it and just haven't wanted to take the plunge yet. For me one of the biggest cons would be tire height would be greater so I'd be up in the air even more. At times I can barely get my feet down at a stop depending on the road contours. I definitely dont need to raise the bike.

A 175/60R-16, or a 195/55R-16 will actually lower the bike's ride/seat height!

Mike ... you never did say what model of Dunlops are on it (?)
Also check what the date stamp is on those tires. I would not ride on any tire that is greater than 5, or 6 years old at the most!
Either, or both of those can make quite the difference in handling, as well as changing your fork fluid and installing the proper fluid to the correct height in the tubes

Take a really good look at that back tire. I've had a couple times when I experienced what you described and it turned out to be problem with my rear tire, not the front. Put the bike up on the center stand and place a brick or some heavy object near the tire as you rotate it so you can observe how true the tire is for width and roundness. If I were a betting man, I bet you find that there is an out-of-round area on that rear tire, maybe even a place where the bead is not seated properly. If it gets bad enough, as the tire wears down it you will develop a "lope" at low speeds that you can feel, but until the tread wears down enough for the lope to show up, the wondering symptom is all you will notice.

When I have had problems with a front tire, it often shows up in low speed wobble. I don't really recommend this, but the way I discovered this is by taking my hands barely off the bars while slowing down with no brakes on a smooth piece of road. A slipped belt or out of round front tire will usually start shaking my bars between 35 and 20mph as I slow down, but the slight cupping that often occurs on the front tire will not do this by itself.

Don't forget, in the end, it could just be you. I got mine back together and went for a ride. I think I'm getting used to the mass and I'm starting to relax a bit.
I also noticed I'm no longer weaving at the lower speeds like I was.
So, your Wing may be in very good operating condition, you just need to get used to it. :D

Ooops! Sorry, I forgot.

My rear tire is a Bridgestone Exedra G702 Touring. I couldn't find anywhere on it if it was a radial or bias ply tire.
I would think if it was a radial tire, it would say "Radial" on it somewheres.

It did have max air pressure 42 lbs. on it.

OldZX11Rider your rear tire is a bias ply tire and yes all radial tires will have an R if it was a radial you will see the num. like this 130/70R18 but on bias its 130/70H18
and the G702 are bias the G704 are radial.

What does the "H" stand for on a bias ply tire?

"H" is speed rating, think h is up to 130 mph, but not sure, wing wont exceed anyway, I run "V" on my CBR it will easily.
My wing is a 96 and came with bias. Didnt know bias were still around and put on radials, bike tends to be always "moving " around, not unstable but more like a sports car rather than a Cadillac.

Didn't think about speed rating. Not for a Goldwing anyhow. Pretty much stick with the speed limit nowadays. Except when I got on the interstate and ran it up to 85 MPH just to see how well it responded.
I don't think I'll be doing much more than that, if that, while on vacation. :D
