88 GL1500 fuel pump relay test results

Postby pugetsoundsailer » Sat Dec 05, 2015 10:40 pm

I FINALLY got back on this bike that I had just picked up, I'd like to thank everyone who chimed in, I studied your comments with great interest and here's where I'm at now. I replaced the fuel pump and it works with direct power but not from the wiring. I tested the wires going to the relay and everything test good except the one wire that goes to the pump ( blk/red ) should read between 4 - 5 k ohm's and I'm getting 2.843 at the relay plug. With the relay in place I'm getting power to the pump plug but when I attach it to the fuel pump the voltage drops way down to below 2 volts. I unplug it and test the plug again the voltage is back to normal. But there's no short in this new pump, works fine with direct power from the battery .....
And the bummer is the shop manual that came with the bike is for a 1990, so the wiring is different. I found the testing info for the relay on another thread

I'm pretty sure you have either a loose connection in that circuit, or a bad relay (with a poor connection either internally or externally). That is a classic symptom of a poor connection or bad contacts. The wire, relay, connection, can transmit full voltage when unloaded (no pump), but cannot transmit the voltage/amperage to the load (pump), when connected. The loose connection becomes a load itself (via resistance), and some of the voltage "drops" across the loose connection. The contacts in the relay, itself, could be weak or burned, or the socket where it plugs in could have a weak connection. Otherwise, the wires leading to or from the relay.

Starting multiple threads regarding a fuel pump issue is never advisable or desired.

From the picture posted one thing I can tell you is that you have connected the pump power and low fuel sensor wires bass-akwards on the pump housing.
This is what I do
