1500 Fuel gauge shows FULL but does not move

Postby callieh » Mon Dec 14, 2015 4:10 am

Hi

My 1500's fuel gauge drops to zero when the engine is off, and on startup it goes right up to FULL. But it stays there - does not drop as fuel is consumed, even when the tank is right doen to empty. I have to use the kilometres travelled to calculate when to refuel - which is obviously not so good !

Obviously the needle is not STUCK as it would then not move down when the egine is switched off. Not would it move up when the bike starts.

Any ideas on what can be wrong ?

There is a yellow/white wire that runs from the fuel gauge to the fuel sender on the left side of the fuel tank. If this wire is pinched and shorted to ground at any point, the fuel gauge will show F at all times.

Disconnect this yellow/white wire from the fuel sender. If the fuel gauge stays at F, then the wire is shorted to ground somewhere between there and the fuel gauge. If the fuel gauge goes down to E when you disconnect the yellow/white wire from the fuel sender, then the fuel sender is bad.

4 - 10 OHMS at the sender and it reads Full
90 - 100 OHMS at the sender and it is on Empty

This from the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual page 7-2
