Mutazu Driver backrest?

Postby T_birdman » Wed Dec 30, 2015 5:29 pm

I just picked up a Mutazu Drivers backrest for my 1500 and was wondering if anyone else has one or installed one before because these folks don't have instructions for installation! I imagine I'll have to line up from both underneath and above but without even a little hint of what could be, I prefer not to cut into the seat just yet.

I went to the Mutazu website here and don't see that they make a product for Goldwings.

I found it on eBay for $108 and they shipped very quickly, but didn't include instructions.
I'm sure once I pull the seat I'll reason it out and make it happen, I was just hoping that someone here had done it before.

I wish you luck.
Does the backrest have a model number on it that you can google?
That might be a good starting place.

Driver Backrest for HONDA GL 1500 (DH19)

I received a reply to my inquiry about instructions saying they sell numerous items without instructions, mounting hardware or technical support which really pissed me off. Even though they shipped by Fed Ex very quickly, and the backrest itself looks to be very well built and the price was very competitive, when it comes to installing a part on my bike that requires I cut into the seat, a bit of guidance would be expected. So I replied I couldn't leave positive feedback to a seller that won't back up what they sell. I'll muddle my way through it, it might install in the same manner as the Utopia backrest, but at least I can warn other wing riders of what to expect from this seller, "Buyer beware, you're on your own with Mutazu products!"

Got to admit, this one surprised me.
I found the backrest and model on Amazon and it was for sale by Mutazu, not someone that you might think would get it wrong.
They don't have anything on their site for Goldwings and I couldn't find any install instructions for anything.

They do have a statement however:
Mutazu Inc. has been in business since 2005 and base in San Leandro CA USA. We sell aftermarket motorcycle accessories and aftermarket replacements for Harley motorcycles as well as most of the metric motorcycles.
We do whole sale to the dealers and retail to the public. Our goal is to provide our customers with the quality products at an affordable price.
We guaranty all our products will fit on your bikes as listing description or your money back. Satisfaction is our priority. For any reason that you are not 100% satisfy with the product. Just simply send it back, we’ll offer you full refund no question ask. (Please refer to our return policy for more details)

Customer Service: 510 483 3658
Business Hours: M-F 9:00 am-4:00 pm PST
Close on weekends and most of the major holidays

You might try calling them and see what they have to say.
By their verbiage on the site, you may run into a language barrier.

I did call them and was told to email them, which I did, then received a reply that stated they don't have any instructions and if I was unsatisfied I could return it. I suppose I could do just that, but before I do I'm pulling the seat off now and looking into how hard it might be to do it on my own.

thinking about this situation, if I do go ahead and install it I'll snap off pics and post a DIY for others.

Ok, so I managed to get the Mutazu driver backrest installed on my GL1500, their claim is that it should go in no problem because it's been engineered for the Goldwing seat...I say horse-sh*t. I had to hammer out a few things in order for it to fit, but it is installed and feels and looks good. I don't like how this was missing the leather piece that should be affixed to the cut slit in the seat where the flat bar comes up through like it comes with the Utopia backrest, but I have a selection of leather and can fabricate a piece to use.

So the first thing I did was to remove the seat, and visually line up the bracket to the bottom of the seat.

I measured for center to find out how wide the bottom would need to be cut out, and marked the bottom.
Once it was measured twice, I used my Weller soldering gun with a cutting knife tip to carve out the seat for the bar to go through.

The hot knife worked well cutting through the plastic seat pan, and worked to a certain point on the foam seat padding but only as far in as the blade tip would go in. From that point I used a long sharp x-acto knife and a small x-acto saw tip to cut the foam up to the leather.

Once I reached the leather seat cover I used a long but thin electronic phillips screwdriver to poke a hole at Top, at the center for reference and cut a 4 inch slit. I pushed the bar up to see where it landed.

A bit of a gap for me to finish this, but the world stills turns pretty rapidly, sorry. The base of the seat pan had some casting humps that made it necessary to hammer the mounting bracket at bit to conform to the seat underneath but it did go. The part of the bracket that sticks up though the seat actually came through a bit too far forward for my tastes, which is why I had hoped for some guidance, but I think it will possibly be better for support and riding posture, so I'll quit complaining about the lack of instructions part. Here is the finished project pic.

Came out looking good anyway and I'm sure that it feels a whole lot better.

It does, I took it for a spin afterward, concerned it was too far forward but it was very comfortable! Thanks for jumping in on my post :D
