Gl1500 instrument panel re-install issue

Postby bntyhntr6975 » Sat Jan 23, 2016 8:57 pm

I had to remove speedometer and give it a good cleaning (howl is now gone, but only tested with a drill so far).
Putting the dash bezel back on ran into an issue. The bezel seems to be sitting where it should, but now there is a gap (a strong 1/4") between the bezel and the cluster. Were there spacers behind the cluster? Pretty sure I woulda noticed 4 spacers dropping but I didnt. It sure seems the cluster is setting too deep now, causing the gap. The bezel is fitting good on both ends where the vents go and not binding on anything.
Anyone ran into this before?

(On a side note, this chore has been SO much fun that I recommend it to anyone that wants to prove their worth or test their patience.)

Mine is an 88....I do not remember any spacers on mine, though I had it off 2 years ago when I did the LED upgrade on the instrument panel....I am looking at my parts manual and I do not see any 1/4" spacers anywhere. Someone else can chime in to make sure I am correct or not....it happens.

I dont think there were any spacers, and i dont think the screws would be long enough for them anyway.
Maybe the gap was there and I never noticed it but i dont think so.
The ignition cover seems to line up good with the bezel so pretty sure the bezel is where its supposed to be. Just cant figure it out.

I don't recall a gap...perhaps you could post a picture, and we could make a better effort at diagnosis?

I believe that I know what you are referring to. With the instrument cluster installed and the outer dash trim covering (the piece that covers the instrument cluster and speakers) installed, there is in fact an approximate 1/4" gap between the face of the instrument cluster and the dash trim covering. Just verified this by checking both my 93 & 2000 wing.

That is exactly what I was talking about. How did I never notice it before??
I think I'll try some foam weatherstripping in there to fill the unsightly gap. On the other hand, since I never noticed it till now, I guess it wasnt so unsightly. Lol.
Thanks for the help!

"What you never noticed before, is what you never noticed before." 8-)

I suggest to leave the gap there. Anything touching that clear plastic will scuff it.
IF you need that gap gone, tape/glue a washer to the back of the meter housing. Next removal they're not dropped.
