You're assuming that it's electrical and not fuel?
I would also try running some Seafoam through the gas tank and check your fuel filter.

There are no weak points on the 1500 ignition system and are pretty much bullet proof and is very unlikely to be causing problems.

Fuel problems on the other hand can be numerous and as Dusty wrote check fuel filter then petcock.

Describe exactly what is going on and at what speeds.
This is what I do

A crack in the main fuse?? in front of the battery. Loose wiring in the ignition switch connection. short in the kill switch.

I would think the kill switch If it was the main fuse all pre sets on the radio and clock would not be set when the bike started running again. Try taking the unit loose from the handlebar and spray contact cleaner in it. Cover up any parts on the bike that the contact cleaner can get on

What you're describing is 100% electrical, not fuel. Something is interrupting power to the entire bike momentarily.

Things to check:

- Master fuse. Don't just look at it, REMOVE it and check it for cracks.

- Battery terminals. Make sure they are on tight

- Battery wires - with the bike running, wiggle the battery wires around and see if you can get the bike to fail like you're experiencing while riding.

- Ignition switch. Try jiggling it around with the bike running and see if you can get the bike to fail.

Things it won't be:

- Kill switch. A bad kill switch will not cause the dash to reset like you described.

- Fuel. Fuel problems tend to exhibit themselves as bogging down over time. Your problem is the electrics turning off momentarily. This causes unburned fuel to be pumped through the engine and into the exhaust. When the electrics turn back on, the engine comes back to life, and the hot exhaust gases from the now-running engine ignite the unburned fuel still in the exhaust, causing the loud backfire.

Along with WingAdmin suggestions...
While idling, try tapping/pounding on various parts to replicate the problem.
That help zero in the problem part if/when found.

I've had momentary fuel starved motor and all lights stayed on.
Your problem should be electrical.

1997? Do check your petcocks diaphragm as maintenance check. It's a 20 minute R&R.
