Speedometer drive gear

Postby Michael Faircloth » Tue Jan 26, 2016 4:52 pm

'96 1500 Aspy...
I have a broken drive gear on the left front wheel... the long skinny one with the blade end. The blade has sheared off. I got a new cable and installed it and am now looking at the drive gear housing on the bench. I want to get the broken gear out of the housing , but it appears to have a pressed in and serrated housing hold it into the larger housing. Anyone taken one of these apart and know how to get the pressed in part out to get to the gear? There is not much to get a hold of.

Update...
Well I called and ordered the part... when it came in to the Honda dealer, of course it was the WRONG part... that's when I found out that you cannot get the small "driven" gear that fits into the speedometer cable. It comes with the whole housing.... so $100.00 later, and now I get to wait another week to get that part and then drive the 70 miles round trip to pick up that part... but in the end, I will have my bike back working.

Is this what you needed? http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/h ... 2-003.html If so, way less than ordering from a dealer......

Bill,
Yup... that is what I had to get... tho I only needed the small tab sticking out perpendicular to the axis. The dealer price ended up being $69.00 ... so I'm happy with the part. Thanks for the info.

Glad you got it repaired. Riding shouldn't be a problem in your area of Florida this time of year. Don't you know? It's about the ride, not about the destination........

Bill,
I see your in California... I spent 58 years in San Diego before retiring to Naples. You're right... it was never a problem riding in San Diego or Naples... when I'm not on the bike, I'm in the Silver Cloud pictured at the right.

I am in Northern California some 600 miles North of SD. Going for a short ride today and a longer one tomorrow. We are having temps in the 70's all week without any rain. Changed my rear tire yesterday, so I need to make sure all is OK before I take the longer trip tomorrow.

Good luck on your trip... My last big trip... a few months ago... was from Naples to San Diego and back. All by myself.. 6500 miles and the bike never had one problem.

Thanks... I am planning a trip to Florida this summer if finances permit. Time, I have.... I lived in Jupiter, FL for 13 years. Wish I was back there now, miss all the good fishing not to mention the warm weather this time of year.... Today's ride went well. I wanted to check out the spare rear tire, it has the typical Dunlop howl at slower speeds... Tomorrows trip is about 150 miles down to my son's place to watch the SuperBowl game and then I have some DR's appt's on Monday and then back home. I have a trip coming up in mid-March down to Laughlin, NV for a few days for a reunion with the company I worked for once upon a time....
