Ignition "key slot" cover missing ?

Postby vv0350 » Wed Feb 17, 2016 8:31 am

Noted that the little chrome/stainless key slot cover is no longer closing up when the key is removed...so, it seems that the lock may be "unsealed" from the elements...Is this a real problem or do I need to replace the lock unit...looks like it is a bit of a chore to replace the lock unit..

It's only really a problem when that plastic cover gets trapped down in the lock and you can't get the key inserted.

Yes. I noticed it on my fuel door lock...and a few weeks later, the lock suddenly stopped working. The little cover had worked its way down into the key mechanism. I had to replace the lock.

I had the problem on my right fairing pocket.
A locksmith was able to dig the part out with a pick and tweezers so I didn't have to replace everything.

Is it just folded over and stuck or is it broken? Maybe a shot of silicone will fix it.

Don't know. Just can't/don't see it any more. I guess I need to get a strong flash light and try to figure out were it went.

Hope you get it fixed. I made a couple key knobs. I leave them in all the time. My ignition key I used a chrome acorn nut that I was able to jam the key into. I only take the ignition key out if I'm somewhere I don't think is safe or I will be away from the bike for a long time. A friend made a key knob for his F6B ignition and leaves it in all the time.
