ATTENTION: 1500 Exhaust Surgeons

Has anyone dissected a GL1500 exhaust collector?
If so, got pix?
Or is it just like a muffler with a few baf'f'f'fles?

There's nothing secret in there, no built in catalytic converter like the GL1800. It's just a standard muffler full of baffles.

AHHhh, that's why the Wing is so quiet, double mufflers.
I suppose taking that chamber out and hooking straight up to HD long mufflers will have a definite rumble.

For those that have run their 1500 without tailpipes you know how quiet the exhaust still seems to be without the Honda nomenclature mufflers.

The collector box is in reality just a muffler and the tailpipes are resonators which further fine tune the exhaust note same as found on all the better automobiles of the era.

The 1500 was very advanced design wise when put into production.

So I take it the collection box takes each sides exhaust pulse and rams the other side to cancel out most of the noise.
It's an old idea that still works great.

Still I wonder what the sound will be without the collection box and HD mufflers.
Anyone know of a video?

The collector box (muffler) also killed another bird with the same stone and that was the crossover or equalizer pipe between both sides found on earlier models. It was just an evolution of the time.

If you want to hear it loud take it one step further and remove collector box then run it. It is now open headers and you can't even talk to somebody close by.

YAAaaa, I know about open headers. I done a little racing in the 70's. That's not what I'm hoping for.
I guess I still have a little of that in my blood so I'm looking to tune the bikes tone...

It's doable.
I can adjust that sound with different 'UP the tail' baffle inserts.
I can also hear a bit of hollowness from the mufflers first empty chamber, that's adjustable also.
I got the HD muffs 1.5 years ago so I'm set there. Yup, $20 for the pair.

Anyone know the exhaust pipe size off the headers?
