current leakage

Postby steve r » Thu Mar 17, 2016 2:03 pm

about how many milliamps should be drawn on a stock 97 1500se from the battery when bike is turned off? I know the memory for the radio, clock and CB have a power consumption
New battery (2 months Autocraft powersports), charges at 14.2 volts at an idle.
Put it on a trickle charger, a 2 amp charger and have used the bikes system to charge.
2-3 days later and I cant get it to crank for more than 5 seconds. Begins strong, dies out fast. Old battery gave me a few weeks and would crank for 15-20 seconds before slowing down.

Defective battery or am I missing something?

The battery may check good but not have any staying power.
I forget what they called it, (a draw down test?) but some auto parts places can test a battery. Don't know if they can do it with a motorcycle battery but it might be worth a try.

A load test is what is needed.

Thank you. Had a brainfart and couldn't remember what it was called!
