trailer hitch questions

Postby smitty716 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 5:12 pm

As a lot of you know I just picked up a 1994 GL 1500 Aspencade. As I was washing it today after a ride I noticed it had a trailer hitch already Installed.
My first question is - What do you use for a receiver as far as drop ? Do you just get a straight receiver or do you use a drop receiver ?
Second question is - It is wired with one of those small round metal 5 pin plugs, should I replace that with a flat plug like used on most boat trailers or what do you guys think ?
and pictures would be appreciated. Thanks again as you all are the greatest win it come to help and knowledge...

I use a flat bar personally, but it will vary depending on the trailer as you want that to be level. As for the round 5, keep it in my opinion. Our bikes use seperate lights for Run, Break, Left turn , Right turn and Ground. A flat four would require a adaptor to combine the stop and turn lights together. I actually use a 6 round, with the 6th lead being a 12v hot for a cig / usb combo charger inside the trailer for my phone, tablet or camera while riding.

Thanks for the Info, I hadn't thought about the separate wires for the blinkers. now to find a receiver for it.

I was in the same boat - I had a receiver on my bike, but no ball mount to slide into it. I got my trailer, leveled it behind my bike, then measured the drop between the bottom of its hitch and my receiver. I ended up getting a ball mount with about a 1 1/2" drop, and that was perfect for my trailer.

Keep the round 5 pin connector, they are far more solid and reliable than the flat connectors.
