Trunk frame brackets broken, can it be welded?

Postby ecarmichael » Sat Mar 26, 2016 8:38 pm

So my trunk has always rattled coming out of the driveway or going over big bumps on my '92 Aspencade. I took the trunk off today and found both brackets closest to the backrest broken off. The support tube that comes up to it at a 45 degree angle was sheared off as well. If I can find someone with a welder will I be able to weld it back together?

I just welded mine recently. I took the subframe off to prevent messing up the computer and wiring. Everything worked out OK. The wrecked bike that I bought for spare parts had the same repair done to it also. The angle brace is very thin metal, so I put a solid rod inside of it before welding. Good luck with your repair. Ride safe, Joe

It can be TG welded, MIG welded or Ody-Acetylrne welded or brazed. All processes can be used but your best bet is to remove the sub-frame and take it to a certified welder and have them do the repair. Since you already have the trunk off, it is a simple matter to remove the saddlebags and then remove the sub-frame.
