GL1500 Stalls When Throttle Is Turned Backwards

Postby bford154 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 8:55 am

My parents just bought a 1988 GL1500 and I am going through it for them trying to fix a couple issues and do some preventative maintenance. When you turn the throttle just a little bit past its normal resting place the bike will rough run and then usually stall.

I have owned and worked on many dirt bikes over the years and I currently have a Shadow 750 but I have never had a Goldwing before so I have no experience working on this particular bike. I did a compression test when we first brought it home and the lowest reading of the 6 cylinder was 155 psi the other 5 were up around 170 psi so I think the overall health of the rings and valves are ok. I verified that the carburetors were sync’ed fine; no adjustment was needed. The bike runs and idols fairly well once it is warmed up I just don’t understand the stalling issue when the throttle is turned backwards a little past its static resting place. You may also notice in the video below that the tach is reading approximately double what it should at any given rpm. I will have to dig into that issue next to see what could possibly be causing the tach to be off by a factor of 2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Seems like you just need to adjust the throttle cable..youi are closing of the fuel supply when she is turned forward. Put the choke on and try it..she may still run the choke is actually fuel supply.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

The 1988 1500s are notorious for carb off idle hesitation problems. If you do a search here you will find dozens of threads regarding this. Sounds, to me, like someone has intentionally set the idle high to keep it running. When you reverse the throttle you are just forcing the idle linkage to a lower setting. Just above and to the right of the fuel cap there is a knurled knob that is the idle adjuster. Play with that to lower the idle to test. All in all you more than are looking at a carb rebuild. It is probably running on the main fuel circuits instead of the idle circuits.

Thanks for the input guys; I will take a closer look at the idol adjustment this weekend. It doesn't look like the throttle return cable is pulling the throttle tube back with enough force. When I look behind the frame with a flashlight it looks like there is a little slack in the throttle return cable. My only reference is working on dirt bikes and I know when I let go of the throttle on them there is a nice crisp snap back and no additional backwards movement. The throttle on this Golding returns on its own but doesn't do it with nearly the force that I am used to and then as seen in the video there is additional backwards movement available. It just doesn't feel quite right but this is my first time ever working on a wing so I am a little lost as to what is "normal". Thanks again for the help.

Do adjust the idle knob up and down so the resting position is at the proper idle speed.Being able to rotate the throttle backward past the rest position is normal. The throttle mechanism allows this to operate a switch mounted to the carbs to cancel the cruise but should not decrease the throttle idle setting.

Your engine is idling at 1500 RPM and is way high. Correct that problem and the rest should fall in place. The engine should be able to idle all the way down to 450 RPM via the idle control knob. :)

I think it's two problems - an idle adjusted too high, and a throttle push cable that is either broken or too loose. I would check both cables and adjust them properly, then adjust the idle and try again.
