Clutch start switch

Postby truckindrummers1500 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 9:10 am

Have a problem with my bike not starting with clutch lever pulled in. I've replace the clutch start switch with a OEM new one and still will not start. Anyone else incurred this problem?? Starts fine in neutral though. Thanks in advance...

With a good set of ears, slowly pull in the clutch lever..You should hear the neutral safety switch click right when the lever is about to touch the grip. This can also be seen with a ohm meter attached to the switch.
Oversized grip, worn / bent parts and misalignment are usually the root cause if you can manually short the switch contacts and crank it in gear (while pulling in the clutch lever too).

Do you have aftermarket grips? They can also cause the lever not to be able to hit the switch

Leather grips but they've been on for a long time and haven't had the issue until now which has me perplexed, especially with the new switch now....

Be very very quite.
No really, pull in the clutch, you can see the switch from below, and listen for the switch to click. If it doesn't click it's not going all the way in. It happened on my bike. I glued a couple of shims to the switch and now it works great.

How thick did you have to go with the shims? Going to need to do the same, new switch (old one didn't work when I tested) and it works, but need to get the last little bit to engage the switch.

Not real sure, somewhere between .02 and .03 . What ever it takes for that last little bit.
