Cruise control not working, where to start?

Postby Dutch_Hans » Mon Mar 28, 2016 2:30 pm

Hello all, my cruise control worked fine, but suddenly nothing... The indicator light doesn't light, not when i switch contact, neither when i push the cruise control button.. I found several messages about cruise control faillure... But where do I start looking for the error?...

All help is appreciated...
Happy easter from Germany

Sounds like a simple question, but there are many variables, first of all, what bike do you have?
Are you saying that both the "Cruise On" and the "Set" light will not come on?
If the "Cruise On" will not come on, then I would first make sure the bulb is good.
If bulb is good, then I would start by checking the switch, fuses, and relays. This light should come on when the switch is pressed, regardless of conditions. The "Set" light is another matter, there are many things that can keep this from working.

You will probably want to download a manual so you can follow the circuits.

If the systems thinks your brake or clutch levers are depressed it won't set..various reasons for this most common..bad bushing or return springs..also grounded circuit. Bad filter in the vacuum unit..have you chanced it? could also be your issue.

But a clearer explanation would the cruise on light Vs the cruise set light for instance..

First of all thanks for replying. I have a 1500 Aspencade 1995. I thought normally the cruise control light lights when you switch the key to contact.. That doesn't happen.. Can this be a fuse or relay? When I push cruise control to on.. The indicator light doesnt come on either. Is there something like a step by step guide?

Thanks in advance
Hans

It could be fuse, relay, or just blown bulb. You could just have a blown bulb in the "Cruise On' light, and another problem keeping the "Set" light from coming on. I'm pretty sure both lights come on briefly during test when you first turn the key, but let me check mine to be sure and get back to you.

In the Honda shop manual there should be a step by step guide.

I checked mine and both the "Cruise on" and "Set lights come on when key is first turned, both are yellow on my bike and after a couple seconds they both go off unless the cruise switch is pushed in. In this case the "Set" light is the only one that goes off, and the "Cruise on" light stays on.

First thing I would do would be check the light bulbs for cruise and set. Easier said than done, but still, you'll be chasing your tail if the bulbs are bad.
