The switch is located behind the front engine cover. It is not designed to be repaired, just replaced.I tried.
Mine has trouble indicating neutral when downshifting eg.2nd to neutral no light,1st to neutral lights the indicator.

There is also a "neutral" switch used by the reverse system, its bolted into the block just above the right footrest area, near the reverse cable bracket (if I remember correctly).

If you find neutral, can you crank the bike without pulling in the clutch lever?

If you have power to one side of the neutral light bulb then it is the gearshift sensor at front of engine which grounds the bulb to illuminate.
This is what I do

I'm not sure about yours but,on my 88, not having the switch working affects the cruise control and ignition timing.

Be aware that you will be doing a oil change when you remove the front cover.Don't forget about the gasket either.Verify the switch position before you put the cover back on,I think it can be turned 180° off.
I plugged mine in,turned on the key and rotated it till the neutral lamp came on(you have to ground the switch case) to locate the proper position. It takes a few hours to do this job.Lots of hard to get at bolts.
