What happened to 15/40?

Postby triketrash » Tue Apr 12, 2016 12:11 am

Just picked up a nice 96 Interstate after being wingless for about a year. Wanting to change oil and went looking for the high mileage Mobil 15/40 synthetic. I've checked a few shops and nobody stocks it any longer- can I use 10/30 instead?

I have found that the best source for type of oil to use in any vehicle is the Owners Manual or the manufacturers Service Manual. They specify what is the best weight and API service category(SG, SL and so forth).

The manuals usually have a chart or diagram listing the best oil also based on operating ambient temperatures as well as how the vehicle is operated.

Just remember with a motorcycle you want to use an oil that does NOT have the words or phrase "energy conserving" or anything similar. Whether or not you use dino oil or synthetic in early engines is your choice as long as it meets the specs for your bike.

If that is what you want to stick with, look for the 10-40. Most 10-30 oils are energy conserving and you do not want that.

Thanks for the replies guys- I realize now that it was the Mobil high mileage 10/40 that I had used- but this is no longer available in my area. Yes I am aware not to use the "energy conserving" products- this is why I chose the high mileage - they are not. Maybe I'll go for the 10/30 instead.

As was posted earlier, MOST 10/30 oils are automotive, and energy conserving. Mobil (I'm a big fan) makes a bike specific 10W-40 sold in quart bottles. Yeah, it's a little pricey. If you want cheaper, the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 is less expensive and a pretty good full synthetic. I used it once, but prefer the Mobil bike oil. The 5W is a little light for Florida. Valvoline also has a bike specific full syn 10W-40 that I've used, and is very good, also cheaper than the Mobil bike oil. Walmart carries the Valvoline at a good price. Valvoline $8.50 / Qt. vs Mobil $10-12 / Qt. I just find the Mobil on sale, or with a good discount, and buy enough to do several changes.

Walmart sells Mobil 1 10/40 by the bottle and gallon. High Mileage too.

I'm gonna go out on a 'platform', and speculate that if you can't buy that particular oil, it has something to do with the "Anti-Drilling Offshore Kayaker Association" finding something objectionable about diesel oil. You could probably stock up the next time you cross a state line into a less environmentally militant state. People here in Florida, used to make 'cigarette runs' to South Carolina. You'd place your order with whoever was making the run, and pick up your tax-free cigarettes when they returned. Doesn't work that way anymore, since all of government has jumped on the anti-smoker tax bandwagon.
