93 Gl1500 Aspy won't start

Postby DarthJ » Tue Apr 12, 2016 7:53 pm

OK, so the other day, I rode out to have lunch. Everything worked fine, rode to the place, stopped and had a nice lunch. Get back to the bike, turn the ignition on, lights, radio, everything works. Shifted into neutral, light came on, sidestand light was on as well. (have to start in neutral, clutch switch does work, but have aftermarket grips, lever won't activate the switch) Put the stop switch into run and as soon as I hit start (I mean, immediately) the display goes dead and I have no power, no lights, no anything. Towed her home and now am at a loss as to what it could be. I did check the fuses and fusible links, they all looked fine. When I turn the bike on accessory, the radio and display do come on, but as soon as I turn the ignition to on, it goes dead. I do hear clicking from the relay box and have swapped some out, but still nothing.

Hmmm... Put a decent load on it and it goes dead? Sounds like a battery I had once. It was only one month old and a cell shorted out. My wing acted the same way.

Did you clean your battery cable connections?

My 94 did almost the same thing. Tested everything the battery just went between rides. Replaced battery with AGM style, & it has been fine ever since.

Good luck

Got one on the way from Cyclemax, went AGM as well. I tried to find one local, but no-go. Since I took the bags off to check the relays (couldn't get to them with them in place), figured I'd clean out the accumulated crap and clean off some light rust on the saddlebag frame and tipovers.

Follow up, AGM battery arrived yesterday (bless you, Cyclemax!) put her in, and she's alive. Back to normal, gt her buttoned back up (cleaned up behind panels since I had them off to check relays) now just needs a wash and ride.

Glad you got her going! I had a high-end AGM battery that did that, too. It checked out perfectly for at-rest voltage, and seemed to charge etc. normally - it just didn't produce enough amperage to crank the engine after 30 seconds off the charger. The GL1500's seem to really tax their batteries & alternators, so upgrades seem to be the way to go. I went with a brand new, generic AGM to replace my failing name-brand one, and added a 95-amp alternator as well. No more sluggish starts!

Yeah, I'm thinking a higher alternator might be the way to go, especially since I'd like to add some more lighting to the front. I'm just glad it's running and clean again, weather's been great for riding.
