neutral safe switch

Postby docm » Tue Apr 19, 2016 10:20 am

1997 GL1500, turn on switch, neutral safe light does not come on, bike won't start, clutch-in start doesn't won't work either. Push off - bike cranks. I used Reverse the other day and N light did not come on, rolled it off, w/help, started, had to make another stop, left bike running. when I came out 4-5 min N light was on. when I got home parked bike . now tried to start bike no N light. happened some in the past, I engaged the reverse lever a few times and it would come back on. I tried that now so far no light. it's on center stand, ran shift lever up and down so I'm in neutral....help

I would start with the reverse switch, if that is when this problem started. It could be broken or just need a simple cleaning. Unfortunately, getting to it is not as simple.

If the neutral light does not come on after returning the reverse lever to the down position, there is no way the starter will engage.

yes I've found that out, it is NOT SIMPLE, removed the seat, side covers, 2 nuts at the end of the top/radio cover at the gas cap door. can't see what is holding the cover on near the windshield, can lift a little but not going to force it...Love my wing but damn just damn... got to see if I can find my shop manual. Got no hill here

If the reverse switch is the issue, I would replace it, as opposed to just cleaning. My experience with dirty or corroded switches is that if it failed once, it will fail again, sooner than later. Cheap part, but a lot of effort to get to it.

If you look at the How To for the Cruise and Sub filters, it shows the method of removing that panel.
