Cool, thank you. I was concerned since the part # is different, now I see its the design and not the fit.

Not sure why they would be loud....do they have rust holes?
If they are in good shape, not sure you would get any more quieter......

I've been looking at replacing mine as I've epoxied a rust hole in the bottom rear of one of mine. I'm looking at the option that a few people have posted about replacing with used Harley mufflers for a fraction of the price.
The are a number of barely used mufflers on kijiji for $100 to $200 for a pair.

Has my 89 sound like a sewing machine and this one sounds like a Harley

Just replaced the mufflers on my 1500 with a pair of Harley Davidson mufflers I found on craigslist for $20.00.
The pipes put on by the previous owner looked okay, but they hummed like someone that didn't know the words! They were annoying.
For $20 I was afraid I was going to get some reamed out ear splitters. But they look better than what I've got and they're definitely heavier.
Got them on, started it up and surprise! :o. They are a lot quieter ! I haven't rode it yet (too danged hot out) but I think I'm going to like'em a lot better than that annoying hummmmmm.....

I thought my mufflers on my 99 were getting loud, but when I recently changed the rear tire I put anti seize on the muffler to collector box bolts and worked the bolts back and forth until they loosened up and I was able to tighten them down sufficiently. Bike now sound like new (quiet)

Yeah, any GL1500 oem mufflers will fit. The '98 and newer GL1500s got louder mufflers with the rectangle tips.

Like my new HD mufflers. Not loud but not humming or droning. :D

I may do a change back to the older model mufflers myself this winter. My 99 is way louder than my 88 was. It can be a bit annoying on long trips.

For those of you that switched to the HD mufflers which year/model did you use and how much modification to the mounting brackets did you have to do? Do any of you have a picture of them you can post?
I had a 92 and when I sold it I bought a 98SE. I noticed a little louder sound but not a lot louder, I think the 98 up had a nice mellow sound to them.

Take a look at this link and videos.

There's another video I've seen where the guy goes into great detail about the needed modifications to make HD mufflers fit. There is an adapter that needs to be made at a muffler shop to make it happen. Do a search and you may find it on Youtube.

Here's the one I was thinking of. This is Part 1, of 4 Parts.
