1500 flutter/ clicking noise under load

Postby triketrash » Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:58 am

96 1500 is new to me. Bike has 21000 K. Runs like a top, but I get a light flutter noise under load most noticeable at around 2500 rpm. Sounds like the front of the bike. I just changed the timing belts and thought maybe the gasket from the cover was partially exposed and brushing a cam sprocket ( that's how it sounds) but I pulled the cover everything looks in order. I also ruled out speedo cable noise and front brake noise. I cannot reproduce the sound when running the bike on the stand. Any ideas?

Could be your belt tensioner.

Thanks Dusty. Like that guy, I'd swear the sound was coming from the front but let me look into the alternator dampener idea.

1. If it IS dampeners, why would I only hear it under load?

2 Is that something I could forget about for a while or is it something to attend to pretty quickly?

1. Dampeners are there to dampen out the power pulses of the engine. The more power the engine is putting out, the larger the power pulses.

2. I would look at it and get it fixed if it were my bike. I doubt it would do damage to the engine side of things (with luck), but the alternator is certainly not inexpensive.

So you're saying that if the dampeners wear out, more stress is potentially put on the alternator?
