Electrical problem

Postby goldwinger5566 » Fri Apr 29, 2016 1:26 pm

I took my 1996 GL 1500SE in to my local Honda dealer to have a set of new tires installed. I only have 56,000 on it and we have treated each other very well.
When l picked up my ride they told me l had no running lights, tail lights, brake lights or turn signals. I informed them that they all worked when their man drove into the service bay. They agreed that the problem was caused by them but after three days they still can't get power to the relays that control those lights. My confidence in their abilities is dropping daily.
Any ideas on a fix for this? I'd rather garage my bike at home than the shop!
Thanks

To remove the rear tire the saddlebags have to come off.
My guess is that they didn't reconnect at least one of the electrical plugs.
Also check the fuses and relays to make sure one of them isn't loose or blown.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

You say no turn signals - do the front turn signals work, and just not the back? Or are all four turn signals not functioning? What about your hazard flashers?

Is your horn working?

If it's just the rear lights that are not functioning, I would say it is a ground issue with the lights on the back. All of those lights you mention use the same common ground point, G100:

Fuses and relays appear to be fine.
When the bike is started the front turn signals come on as they should. When you turn either right or left blinker on the front lights both go off.
None of the lights on the trunk or either saddle bag ever come on.
I didn't try the horn or hazards.

Got a call from the Honda dealer today & they found the problem! While removing the trunk to change the rear tire they apparently loosened a relay enough to break contact. They pulled it out, checked that the prongs were straight and seated it tight. All my lights are now back to normal.
Thanks for your much appreciated replies.
