Turn Signal Right Left Not Working

Postby AzPayne » Thu May 05, 2016 12:24 pm

I have a GL1500 right turn signal stopped working. Swapped out the bulb thinking easy fix...of course it wasn't.

Front blinker does work so I feel like it is not the switch but maybe the housing for the bulb.

Not sure what next step would be...

When a lamp stops working, its from lack of electric getting to or from the filament.
Using your test lamp connected to the battery ground post, turn on the offending lamp and probe each wire. One should have volts to light it up AND the green wire should have no volts.
As I recall, the lamp harness does make a connection in a plug.one could be corroded or loose.
Always test while trying to operate the lights.

I was not able to get a read off off the wires but when I put the probe into the harness that holds the bulb it blinks quickly just like the blinker in the console. I haven't tried anything else yet. There could be corrosion...I guess I could try cleaning that next. Any suggestions on what to use?

Any other suggestions on what could be wrong?

Thanks

If you had power feeding the lamp housing and no voltage on the ground wire it does indicate that the housing isn't making connection.Chemical cleaning never worked well for me,I usually just replace the lamp housing.

First off you say 'Right Left' not working and then you say 'right' not working. Is it one or both sides?, front or rear? If you have one that doesn't work, take your test light, hook it to battery ground. Touch the test probe to battery positive (just to be sure the test light is working properly). Probe the wires at the socket. One should flash as normal. Does the hazard flasher work on all four lights? If the rear lights don't have power try checking the plugs under the seat. If there is power at the socket, change the test light wire from the battery neg to battery pos and check the other wires at the socket for ground. If flashers work and turn signals don't you probably have a problem in the switch. And always put some dielectric grease in every connector you have apart, even bulb bases to prevent moisture from corroding the connections. I hope this helps.

Sorry I typed that wrong. It is the right rear turn signal. I am new to this electrical stuff so I may need some clarifications.

When I turn the blinker on the probe light blinks when I touch the inside of the housing. See pic.

The hazard flashers work on 3 out of 4 lights. Everyone but the one in question. When I put the switch to the turn side it blinks in the front and rapidly in the console which is how I knew one of them was out while I was riding.

My light probe does nothing when I touch any of the wires even on the lights that work so I am sure I am doing something wrong there. Green or black. I get nothing

Nothing green or black

I don't feel like it is at the switch just because the front blinker works. But I could be off base.
