Engine Noise - Intermittent Growl & Vibration GL1500

Postby alexw » Fri May 20, 2016 8:13 am

This post is for those who may have had a similar issue and are trying to figure out the source of the noise. My GL1500 (1994) started developing a growling noise that would come and go. There was also some vibration that could be felt on the right foot peg which made detecting the source difficult. It sounded like a noisy ac compressor on a car coming on and off randomly; that growling/rattling/vibrating sound. After searching forums and consulting with the local mom and pop Goldwing repair shop (Renegades, Okmulgee, OK) it was determined to be the alternator. Specifically a bearing going out. I found a new Hatachi replacement (not rebuilt) online for $103.00 and replaced it, problem solved.
A couple of points, be careful working the alternator back into place ensuring you get the blades of the alternator in the proper dampener slots and be careful not to damage the o-ring. I also had to reduce the length of the terminal post because it was too long and since space is tight, it would not clear the frame during the small amount of rotating you need to do working it into place. Also, be sure and disconnect the battery to prevent the terminal bolt from shorting out on the frame. It's a relatively easy job overall, just a little tricky getting it in and lined up properly.
It seems that this bearing issue is fairly common based on reading various forums. The alternator I replaced had been rebuilt in 2006, it had a service tag on it and the date etched into the housing. The bike has 60,000 miles on it and I'm guessing the rebuild was at about 40,000 miles. Because a new alternator isn't that expensive, I would recommend getting one rather than having it rebuilt.

Was the Hatachi alternator you found online listed specifically for the Goldwing? And what was the amp rating on it? Did it come with the new rubber bumper things
I'm not in need of an alternator right now but I am curious about the one you have installed on your ' Wing.

Rubber dampeners! That's it, couldn't remember that, had to go back & read your post.

The alternator was for the Goldwing, fit a number of year models. I believe 4 amp. standard output. not the high output model. I reused the dampeners, it didn't come with new ones. Relatively easy job to do.

You must mean the 40 amp I believe that's standard. That would work fine for me as I don't run a bunch of lights or accessories.
I bought my bike last November and its got a 140,000 miles on it now. I've done/am doing a lot of work on it and I've been hearing a funny noise while its idling. I'm suspecting it could be the alternator but it's charging fine, right now.
One costing $103 sounds a lot better than whatever it was for a Compufire.
Coincidently, my bike is a 1994 model too. :D

This is meant as a joke, but you guys are referring to a damper... The thing that prevents vibration or oscillation is a damper. A dampener is something that merely makes something wet... just humor on a lighter note...

Yes, 40 amp. If you buy one of those cheap stethoscopes at harbor freight and place the end on the alternator it will be very clear if that's the issue. Based on my research the bearing(s) are prone to failure. Good luck.

I'm heading out of the country for a couple weeks so I won't be able to look it up until I get to a computer. I don't remember the name of the business. Just Google it and a number of them should come up. Be sure to specify or check that its new, not rebuilt.

I have engine noise on 95 1500 on tickover and under load but disappears when throttle shut

no, the noise would come and go regardless of RPM. Seemed strong at startup.

It's been a while since I seen that other post.... Isn't that Raptor the Saturn alternator?
