Dreaded cruise inop

Postby Team Craig » Mon May 30, 2016 6:33 am

I've been trying to diag this cruise issue for awhile on my 1990 gl1500. I've fixed numerous vacuum leaks & have rebuilt the carbs after purchasing the bike from sitting. I've not fund much online diagnosis for when the cruise on light is lit and when riding the cruise set light comes on but no cruise. I've vacuum tested the actuator and it works. Also while riding I can feel the cruise actuator clicking, any expertise help would be great. Thank you all... Craig

Read this entire thread and do the adjustment to make sure the linkage is set properly. viewtopic.php?f=14&t=27383 May not be your problem but good a starting point.

Thank you dingdong for the reply. Doing the adjustment off of idle set at 500 rpm I probably moved the adjuster out over a 1/4 inch from where it was. Road tested and still nothing. I'm really wanting to ride this thing but don't want to reassemble until the cruise is working.

Can you verify that it is actually pulling a vacuum, i.e. that there is vacuum in the accumulator?

When I pull the vacuum line off the bottle it has quite a bit of vacuum for sure.

OK, so the next thing to look at is the cruise actuator. When you apply vacuum to it, does it actuate the throttle?

Yes when I apply vacuum it pulls the idle up.

Have you checked the condition of the air filter foam..if it crumbles stuff can get sucked into the cruise..and screw it up..take it off and blow it out???

Yes I eliminated that already. Dummy me, I assumed the red cloth covered vacuum hose from the control to the actuator was good. Pulled both ends off and vac tested it and it would not hold vacuum. New hose, test ride and cruise is working... Hurray! Now to reassemble, tag it and let's go ride :D

I know I'm late to the forum. Did you check your clutch pivot bushing? If the clutch lever makes contact with the micro switch the cruise won't set. They will wear through the recess for the plunger and you can't see it but there will be excessive play in the lever.
