1994 GL1500 right speaker weak

Postby 84wingrider » Mon Jun 06, 2016 5:00 pm

Hello all. Although my handle here is 84wingrider, i have since upgraded to a 1994 GL1500A. Didn't want to confuse anyone in helping me diagnose my stereo/speaker issue. Anywho, i recently noticed my right speaker not working. Today i tore into it. I found that the right speaker does work, but is VERY weak. When i unplugged the left speaker, i had to max the volume to hear the weak right side. I swapped speakers and the left one did the same on the right side. Obviously, it is not a speaker issue which i had hoped. I traced the wires into the main loom and wiggled everything. Could not get volume or cracking on right side. Pulled center console and checked connections. Everything looks good there, and again wiggled wires and got nothing. Initially i thought i lost the right channel on the stereo, but there is weak volume??? I don't want to do a major mod and rig an aftermarket stereo in the hole. I know these factory stereos are nothing to brag about, but not interested in mods. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Please remember, the left speaker works with normal volume. Thanks guys!

Does it exhibit the same symptoms while using the tape player? Also how about headset functions?

Hello. Yes, the right speaker does the same while playing a cassette. Very little sound. I do not own headsets so unsure about that.

Since you swapped speakers and got the same results. Checked the wiring and never got any crackling or better volume, it could be a problem within the radio itself.
If you know which wires go from the radio to the speakers, I suppose you could check for continuity. If that checks okay, the only other thing I know you could do is plug in a radio you know is working correctly.
Got any friends nearby with a similar year model Goldwing?

I was thinking about a continuity test myself, but even with low volume it indicates continuity. Does anyone know anybody that repairs these integrated stereos? There are a couple on egay right now, but i don't want to spend $300 on a unit that may not work when it arrives.

This goes out to revtmuller1 and the other replies to my post. Update: I contacted Sierra Electronics, boxed my stereo, and it ships tomorrow...and it's only 2 hrs from me. Looks like they have some knowledge of bike electronics and radios! Thanks for the info!

Yes, Sierra Electronics is the go-to place for our stereos. They will fix them for a flat rate, regardless of what is wrong.

I suspect you might have a bad final (power) transistor.

Whatever it is, they'll fix it and get it back to you in tip-top shape.

As promised, this is a followup regarding my experience with Sierra Electronics. My GL1500 stereo was returned today in perfect working order. Everything Sierra did was very professional, including the call to inform me it has been repaired, and how well it was packed for the return journey to me.

Thanks to everyone here for recommending Sierra Electronics. Just as i was assured, they are indeed the place to go for electronics repair and more.
