Based on the assumption that you have J&M headsets you can purchase a cord with a volume control knob for her headset cord. She could then turn her volume down and you could listen to your music. When she wants to talk to you she can tap you on the helmet and you can turn down the music and talk to her. If you want to talk to her, have a signal for her to turn up her volume control.

That is about all I can think of to try and help you. Cyclemax sells the cords.

If your bike has a separate volume control for the passenger, you can try turning it down all of the way.
My 92 Interstate had a passenger volume, but my 96 SE didn't.
I know that you can turn the radio off and still use the intercom.
Otherwise, I don't think that there is a way to mute the music just out of the passenger helmet without a controller.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

As the others said, you need an inline volume control for the passenger.
BUT you could run the radio on the outside speakers and turn the separation knob on your SE to all front speakers.

Or you could listen to music she likes.

Seriously, the passenger volume control on low is the only way
