Shortage in my headlights

Postby 2wheels » Thu Jun 09, 2016 12:18 am

Ok when I start my aspencade the headlight doesn't come on, so I start shaking wires and bumping the headlight hoping it would come on, well it didn't so I shut the bike off turned the ignition key off and on, still no lights, went on and started it back up when I hit the ignition start button the headlight blinked on, so I fumbled with the ignition start button it came on and stayed, can someone tell me what this is all about, or what might be going on with the headlight and Start button?

Check to make sure the start button it's not sticking part way in. That will kill the headlight. Then clean the switch with contact cleaner.

Ok I got a smile from this one. "Shortage" to me means factory cannot supply item.

You are on the right track with the start button. When that hungry starter starts to turn it requires current from every last corner of the bike including your iphone. The starter button activates a relay that makes sure... your battery is supplying the starter and only the starter. Thus your headlight goes out.

Clean it.. check connections... if still a problem replace the switch.

My post was not exactly right.. the ignition system needs some current to light up those plugs.
I am sure many have noticed their bike will crank and crank and not start.. until you let off the starter button and it starts. If your system... battery, starter, connections, etc are not close to perfect..
there is just not enough juice to spin the engine and energize the coil at the same time.

My 94 is famous for this. Problem goes away for a while after installing new battery.

Let us know what you find on the headlight.

You more than likely have dirty contacts inside the start switch. When the start switch is pressed to run the starter it also turns off the headlights then turns them back on when released. Some have had success squirting contact cleaner into the switch but the only sure way to solve the problem is to open the housing and manually clean the contacts. Be very careful if you do this. There are some small parts inside that can be lost easily.

Thanks a lot for all these helpful tips, joining this cyber community is one of the smartest things I've done since I've owned my 2 Goldwings! The responses are dead on, and you guys know exactly what to tackle, thanks again.........
