Interchangeable Oil Filters for 1988 GL1500

Postby Aussie81Interstate » Fri Jun 10, 2016 2:06 am

Looking to purchase a few oil filters for my bike - just to have a few spares on hand as I like doing the oil changes myself.

Wanting to find out what brands are recommended and also any cross-reference material for other equivalent brands.

I have used recently HIFLO HF303 - but prices seem to have gone up a bit
Also been looking at RYCO RMZ119 ?

Any obvious ones to avoid?

thanks for your responses in advance

Charlie

I don't know if all 1500's take the same oil filter, but I looked it up once and found about 7 different brand name filters for the 1500. Three made by the same company.
NAPA and CarQuest auto parts houses carried filters for the 1500. I've lost the list I had. I don't know of any "bad" filters you should avoid. If there is one, someone on here will know of it.
The same filter for the 1500 fits a Honda car. I think it was the Civic but I don't know what year models.

Too many others to list

Some of the ones that I know will work are Napa 1358, AC PF2135, Castrol 73117 or Purlalator ML 16817.
You can probably get an auto parts store to cross reference one of these to get to others.

I always use Honda filters. But it you want to use after market ones stay away from FRAM.
All 1500 and 1800 Gold wings use the same oil filter

I think the Wix filter should be 51358. I have been using the Purolator Pure One PL14612 filter on mine.

Do you have to remove your cowl to change?

I don't remove the cowl but it sure would be easier to get to if it was off. I have a pair of the oil filter pliers that I can grab it with and get it loose. You need the smaller size pliers.

My plyers are a bit long. But even when I got it loose I couldn't get the filter out without taking that cowl off. :)

This is an old list but there are lots of options here.

One thing I'd like to add is that the FRAM oil filter has really gotten a bad rap for some reason. I suppose years ago there was an issue but the present day filters are no worse or better than any other filter on the market today.

If you have the room, I recommend the longer filters.

MikeB,

Thanks for that list - I really appreciate that - might now go looking for a bulk deal - as the prices in Australia are about $20 each - retail..

Cheers

:)

Which filter are you using? I am using the shorter filter. I think it is about 2.5 inches long.

Happytrails, I love that color on the 1500. I had a 85 LTD that was that same color.

Thanks :D Always liked the LTD's and looked for one for awhile. The ones that were still in decent shape had hefty price tags. Amazingly optioned bike. I dont know all that much history about the Goldwings. So the '91 was painted to pay homage to the '85 LTD?

I'm not sure why they painted the 91 that color but it is the exact same color codes as the 85 LTD. I had bought mine new and I owned it 24 years. It was always kept in the garage out of the weather when not riding it and it was still in beautiful shape when I sold it. I still kind of miss that bike. Loved the fuel injection.

Glad I found this list, those HONDA filters are getting expensive ! I think I will go with the Purolator or the Wix filter on my bike.
