Maint needed on 98 SE with no history

Post by flw » Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:33 am

I have a used bike with no known history of maintenance and 49k miles and is a 1998 SE.

What preventative maintenance should have been preformed by 50K miles (this is just over what the bike has now) and 12 years old.

Obviously engine oil, coolant and tires but what other items?

Please reply in a list format of work to be done, if you can. Also list in order of get done now vs during the next yr.

Service manual: Get one if you don't have one. There are some things you can get into trouble with if you don't have one.
Brakes: check pads and if needed replace, bleed front and rear, if the fluid is extremely dirty or gummed up you will want to service the master cylinder and calipers.
Tires: Check for age of tires (there is a code on the sidewall) , check for age cracks in the sidewalls and tread. Don't take a chance riding on old tires.
Clutch: Bleed or service if needed same as brakes
Air filter: Replace.
Sub filters (2): Replace.
Timing belts: Replace (A must) Even though they will look okay they need to be replaced. Broken belt means bent valves and or pistons.
Rear drive: Even though this should be done when tires are installed you don't know if it was. You need to pull the rear wheel, clean and lube the drive splines with Honda Moly 60 paste.

That's All I can think of right now. More to come. Good luck!
