Clicking noise

Postby Barrick » Fri Jun 17, 2016 9:41 am

Hello all,
I have a 89 GL1500 I am trying to sell, but have an issue with it. This bike is my daily rider, and one day when i was leaving work i tried to start the bike and it wouldn't crank the bike over for several minuets later, so I took it home and charged the battery. After that the starter (when pushing the starter button) started clicking (a mechanical sounding click) over and over until i let up on the button, but it still starter the bike. Also When i place in reverse it made the same clicking noise as it was backing up. I have since taken apart the starter to clean and test, and it works great, but it still clicks when starting, when i put it all back together. I then replaced the right side of battery solenoid, still clicking. I got a new battery, still clicking. I couldn't not find the left side solenoid for sale so i could replace that one. So I am kinda at a loss hear. Any help would be great.

To sum up, The bike is off and in neutral, i hit the starter, and while the button is pressed there is a loud clicking coming from the starter to engine side, and it starts the engine, i let go of button and it stops clicking , and the bike is running normal.
With bike running i put into reverse, the "R" is lit, and i hit the starter button (just like before this all happend) and it would click until i let go of button, while it is backing up.

Thank you so much for your help.

I would take the starter off and run it outside of the bike to see if the clicking still occurs, as a start.

But it even clicks while in reverse. How would I go about checking?

One thing I noticed with the 1500 is that if your battery isn't up to full power then it will fail to start. I took the battery off the bike and charged it up for 24 hours and still couldnt get the bike to start and it turned out that I had a duff cell and when I fitted a new battery (Motobat - AGM) it started first time. - Problem solved for me. :D
