1990 gl1500..ole hesitation prob.

Postby Toyoungforawing » Sat Jun 18, 2016 4:01 pm

First off I'm new to the forum, I own a 1990 gl1500, it recently had a low end hesitation, I tore down the carbs and did a full service and also replaced the fuel filter and the low end hesitation is gone, but know when I'm riding the wing down the road and go for a handful of throttle it boggs down and seems like it want to die but doesn't, I have checked all vacum hoses and also the sub filter. Accelerator pumps IS squirting a good stream of gas(visually saw it) brand new k@n airfilter. Know I'm wondering if it's a fuel delivery prob. Or a mixture screw issue(should I do 1/4--1/2 turn out). Any help full advise will be greatly appreciated. Also just to add that I'm a certified motorcycle tech. Of 17years,and saying that I have exhausted what I know, so this is why I'm posting to see what everyone else has up there sleeves for fixes

Air,fuel,spark and compression.
Don't forget the basics. Each one must be in spec. The question is what one isnt.
Start with the easy stuff.
Compression up to snuff?
Plenty of volts feeding the coils to get a good spark?
What do the plugs look like...inspect each one to get a idea how the engine is running.
Do the slides actually work...are they opening the same...
When looking down the carbs and revving the engine,do the main jets actually flow the same fuel?
Just a few mm. off in the float settings will change the mix just as a bad vacuum line under the black mat...Hope you got that one and the ones on the intake runners.
If you add a bit of "choke" when it's running poorly, does it get better or worse.
My 88 ..right around the 2500-3000 rpm mark.Adding "choke made it worse...I rigged a way to kill the fuel pump..ran it to the bad part and shut off the fuel...4 seconds later the rpm picked up and smoothed out...I reduced the available fuel in the carbs..it was overall too rich. The plugs showed this. They were not a nice clean tan.

I'm not the sharpest guy on this subject, but it sounds like a fuel shortage to me. Have read posts regarding a bad fuel cap not venting the tank and restricting fuel flow. You also need to check the fuel pump out put and flow rate, with and without the fuel filter, which you have changed. Those fuel caps are a bit more complicated than just a cap. They have vent valves that are set to certain specs for pressure, and vacuum. Soaking them in Seafoam or another cleaner can help clear them out, if that's a problem. The service manual will spec the fuel rate for the pump.

Hope I didn't post this twice, the wing only has 17k on it, comp. Is perfect, plugs are nice and tan(darker than lighter) don't want it to lean, elec. System is in perfect working order, so should I put a washer under the needle jet ? Or should I do 1/4---1/2 turns out on the mixture screw ? The wing runs and drives flawlessly untill you grab a handfull of throttle, but it goes through the bog and cont. To ride fine.

Idle mixture adjustment will not have any effect on the mid throttle bog which is likely due to a incorrectly installed slide diaphragm. With air cleaner out rev the engine fast and hard watching the slides movement which should be in tandem and opening a fair bit.
This is what I do

Ct1500, you must be a mind reader, cause that's what I had planned on doing tonight, I just thought if the diaphragm was in wrong or damaged it would affect the throttle response, and I have a great crisp high revving response. Never the less, I'll be looking at it tonight, and thanks so much for every bodies input on trying to solve this problem
