Mirror Change on GL1500

Postby coldcanuk » Sun Jun 26, 2016 8:42 pm

I need to change out just the mirror glass on a GL1500. Thought if I can find directions on how to get it apart that I might add a Muth signal light also. Does anyone have instructions on how the mirrors come apart?

In short; they don't.

But, if you use a heatgun or hairdryer, you might just get the plastic holding the mirror glass soft enough to pry it out and in again.
This is a very precarious process and the risk of breaking the glass is always present. I have a fellow gw owner over here in the Netherlands who has done it
to put LED's behind his mirror glas, so it is possible, but proceed with caution.

Have seen the mirrors cut to get them out. And then glued back together again. May give this a try this summer. Been working to much on the bike lately and would just like to ride. :D

This might be a winter project for me. I have another set off of a wrecked 1992 that I can use to experiment. I was hoping there was a play by play like some of the other repairs done on this site.

I put LED's behind mine by drilling a small hole through the mounting base to get the wires into the cavity behind the mirror. This allowed me to run the wires directly into the dash and under the storage pockets and totally hide the wiring. I rotated the glass up and used long tweezes and 5min epoxy to glue the LED's into the back surface of the mirror housing.

No, they are not going to shine "through" the glass because mirrors are not supposed to allow light to pass through. But the Leds do create a good back lighting that shines out around the edges of the glass.
