94 GL 1500 handlebars" buzzing"

Postby jamie f » Sat Jul 09, 2016 7:07 am

Good morning everyone. I've got a buzzing in my handlebars constantly at low speeds,25 to 30 mph. Also happens above 60, on and off, comes and goes,,,buzz, smooth, buzz smooth. Have checked steering head bearings, new front and rear bearings, checked swing arm bearings, new u joint, new tires with ceramic beads. Have also installed Blackwing fork brace.Braking doesn't seem to change it,rpm doesn't change it( pull in clutch, still does it). What am I overlooking? Any ideas or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Jamie.

Jamie f, I know it's a lot of trouble, but if you still have it, you could re-mount your old tire and see if it eliminated the buzzing. Then you could be pretty sure something was wrong with the new tire. Or, you could do what I did after not being able to get the hop out of mine after trying to balance it. I took it to the Honda shop for them to balance and they told me it was out of round. So I returned it. I re-mounted my old tire, which was not too bad, so I could ride it while I wait for my replacement tire. There might be a defect in your tire.

Mrenfro,i already pitched the old tires, when I put on the Avon Cobra set. I was so disgusted about how they chopped and the rear separated, making it feel like a flat tire.I honestly can't say whether it made this buzzing before new tires or not as they were so chopped/ feathered that they sounded like riding a dirt bike on pavement.I guess I can live with it,hoping someone has had this problem and can lead me to the solution. I can always ride my old 1200,that is a smooth riding bike.

Something is wrong somewhere and the machine is telling you that if the old tires were worn so unevenly/badly. My advice would be to ditch the beads and get the tires machine spin balanced. The guy doing the balancing if alerted should know his job well enough to eliminate a tire/wheel problem and work from there.

Put some miles on it monitoring tire wear characteristics and if strange wear patterns start it has to be a suspension/alignment issue.

The tires I took off were Shinko brand.Had 2500 miles or so on them.Have already put 1500 miles on the Avon's and no sign of wear whatsoever.Bike handles beautifully,on straights and in corners, holds a good solid line,no wandering, snaking or handlebar shake, its just that irritating very fast buzz feel when driving slow speeds.I did run it 500 miles on these new tires without beads, was waiting on order to show up,and had exact same buzz in handlebars.I had someone tell me that the tire itself was just transferring the rough road surface to handbags, due to the tread pattern,i/e alot of surface area. He's a Harley guy,so I hope he's not correct, lol.

Typically Avon likes their tires to be run at the high side of pressures.
Pump them up to the MAX cold PSI on the sidewall and try that for a short while.

it could be as simple as a loose bolt somewhere, maybe around your wheel covers or on the fairing
the tires could be the cause but not the source of the actual noise
just a thought

Aj1500,ive checked and rechecked everything from front to rear.Cannot find anything that's causing this buzzing feeling.I can't hear it Its just a feeling. Can only feel it in handlebars,so I'm guessing it's coming from the front.I am an auto technician at a Ford dealership and chase vibrations and noises everyday, but this has me baffled. It seems the longer I ride the more defined it gets.Cant help thinking it's tire related,as tire builds pressure with heat.If that's all it is,i'll live with it,because it drives and handles great. The best way I can describe this vibration is like a seized u joint in rear of rear wheel drive vehicle except it's in handlebars, fast rotational vibration, and I've already put new ujoint on and it changed nothing.Any other thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks,Jamie

Well, if no one else will say it...

.. .. .. OK fine. If I had a day job.

ANYWAYS, I had a Battlax that was cupping and figured no loss if I tried this.
Bought some balancing beads and added a little extra than recommended, believe it or not, the tire started to wear smooth. It was near it's wear bars on some of the cups, I got a few extra thousand miles out of it.
My mistake was not checking the tire pressure before and after inserting the beads.

Wing in Atlanta beat me to it. It sounds like a relatively high frequency issue, so I was thinking speedo, cable, or maybe even the sending unit at the wheel.

If it isn't the speedo next check the alternator. There are rubber dampers in there that get hard and cause a vibration in the alt. Check it with a stethoscope or a screwdriver up to your ear.

I pulled the speedo cable out and found it all gummed up.Cleaned out the housing and put back together with new speedometer cable lube.Hopefully that was it,no chance to test it out, heading to the lake for a family boating day.Dingdong,i already ruled out alternator since it doesn't change with engine speed, but probably wouldn't hurt to check them bushings anyway, may just order a set so I have them when I pull alternator. Thanks

After cleaning and lubing the speedo cable,i was out for a ride and after about 80 miles, the needle on speedo started bouncing at all speeds,,,and that vibration is still there. So I can only conclude that the cable is not the culprit of vibration and I need a new cable.Im waiting on a cluster I ordered ( my lcd is the black screen of death),so I'll install new cable when I change out lcd.I also ordered alternator rubber bushings from Honda,so I'll be putting them in also. I'm beginning to think my friend is right on tires picking up rough road surface and transmitting to handlebars as a vibration. Time will tell,i'll post back results when parts are changed out.
