Types of carburators.

Postby Don Fonzarelli » Sun Jul 10, 2016 12:49 pm

I keep hearing different stories about the GL1500 being brought out on the market with different types of carburators through the years.
The 1988 model starting of with the ´old´ type and over the years Honda came up with a ´new´ type.
Anybody that can confirm this and explain the difference between the 2 or is it just a lot of mumbojumbo?

Thanks a bunch!

The 88/89 did have a slightly different carb than 90+.I've heard that some replace the 88/89 carb assembly with a later unit to help drivability issues.
There is a change in the slow speed jet as well as other changes.I dont' believe the modules are avaiable anymore.
The 88/89 was the first 1500's to hit the market and Honda did what was required to meet guidelines set by our industry...
The mumbojumbo part.
They got it pretty close but the bike didn't run really perfectly.
There was a recall for this too.

Because the only carb assembly avaiable to me when I bought my bike was at a partsbreaker and he wanted $600 for them..I opted to modify my carbs till i got them to run the bike like i wanted...yes it took 3 monthe of trial and error and yes its just a bit rich but it doesn't have the hesitation any more...Still holding 35+ MPG.
If I had it to do over,I would have held out for a good price on E-Bay for another later model set.It would have been worth a couple hundred just to save me the agrivation and the $55 for the accelerator pump kit...Sheesh..

Thank you Virgilmobile.
If I understand correctly, only the earliest 1500(88/89) had a slightly different set of carburators?
So after 1990 all the carburators are exactly the same?
I'm asking because I noticed some shops in second hand parts, offering 'the new type carburator which is so much better than the old one', but they're NOT referring to the information you just brought up. In what I understand from them is that Honda came with a 'new type of carburator' somewhat in 1994.
So I'm just very curious if they are right and what the difference might be.

I did just a bit of looking in the parts lists for a few different years...
It appears that the 88-89 are different than the other models..

The changes were made starting in 90.These changes appeared in the 90-91 models ...
Main jet, slow jet, slide piston and spring, main needle,ECM and CCM modules.

In 92 the slide piston and spring, main jet, slow jet, main needle were changed again.

So 88-89 are the same insides.
90-91 are the same insides.
92 and up are the same insides.(as far as i can find up to 98).
Each series is different.
90-91 use a different ignition and carb control module than 88-89.
I'm not certain if there different modules used in the 90-91 and the 92-up models.

And as far as I understand...The modules from the 90 and up will not operate in the 88-89...There was a upgrade module for them specifically designed to be used when the 88-89 carbs are upgraded.
