Bad start when hot...

Postby kane67 » Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:27 am

Hi guys!

What makes bad start when hot engine, hot weather and it's been sitting about an hour?
Something to do with fuel, evaporation?

It always fires up right away, but now few times after hour sitting, it doesn't fire up as usual, then second start and it fires up low rpm and I have to give throttle.

If I stop for a coffee (15min) and start, always fires right up.

I made a new heat rubber shield last winter as old one was in pieces.

I wonder what to look, next time I will open throttle when starting. Just to see if it makes difference.

Has someone had this "feature" and what was the fix?

So it does start up though, and runs poorly for a few seconds with the throttle open? How long before it starts running fine again?

After longer start (spinning excellent) wakes alive "low" and just few seconds runs poor low rpm and then settles down to normal idle.
But starting may be 3-4 seconds or more without response first time, that feels soooo long that I usually make a second start with opening throttle .

Compared to usual start as cold or short stop, I just push button and it fires up right away and no need to give throttle.

So I think it is the heat what causes something to carbs/fuel when it sits longer time.
I thought few ways to test when next time comes; 2 throttle twist before start => acc.pump squirts fuel => then start as usual, or open some throttle and hit start button.

Maybe its just to understand better her behavior to fire up... just like with wife :D (still after 23 years marriage)

Sounds like it's flooding just like mine did. Next time it doesn't fire in the first couple of seconds, hold the throttle wide open while cranking to verify

Ok, what was your fix? New float valve set?

I doubled up the replacement heat mat I'd cut from a tractor tire tube. That and tucked it in better than I had it in the harder to reach places.

Okay, I made mine last winter as the old was bad and pieces.
Next winter I need to make it better...

Thanks!
