whats up wit the LCD screen

Postby Breyno » Sat Jul 30, 2016 1:17 am

While out on a ride last weekend this circle started to appear in the lCD screen. I did nothing to start it, it just appeared and kept growing to the size it is now. It hasn't changed since.

I really don't like the look of it and have no idea how it started.

Thanks.

Creeping crud. Common problem with gl1500s. Seems moisture gets into the LCD and continues to grow. There is no fixing once it starts. You have to get a new LCD display. Good luck! Very expensive. OEM is around $575.00

Thought so Tom. Guess I will have to live with it until it takes over the whole screen.

Looks like a "Tacho-eclipse" .... thankfully only a clock and am/fm dial there?

If mine ever does that  .... I'll just put a sticker over it. :!:

If it ever happened to mine, I'm afraid that I would have to replace it. There is a bit more information there than just clock and am/fm radio info.
Of course, if you have an interstate, you are home free. There is no screen there at all.

Loosing a LCD screen is TOO costly. That kind of stuff should be life time warranty.

Very common problem caused by delamination of the LCD panels.

Up until a year and a half ago, you could still get new replacements from Honda for almost $600, but they no longer have any new ones left, so the only ones still available are used.

Oh yeah ..... I forgot the air display. Guess I'ld have to plumb in a psi gage inline ..... the am/fm stuff though, I could survive until I found one as it rarely changes.

LCD's are not simple to create, and definitely not in low quantity. They require specialized chemicals, a vacuum chamber with sputtering equipment, not to mention the pattern of the LCD in the first place. It's normally done in specialized labs, and once they have a pattern made, they manufacture thousands in order to offset the cost of designing and creating the thing in the first place.

I did not know that about LCD screens.
I must of missed that TV shows episode, "How LCD screens are made". :P

Further thinking on this (even tho I'm getting tired), is it possible to use a LED screen?

I ran into that issue when I first got my wing in 2012. The LCD was half way messed up from the top down. I found it was much cheaper to purchase a complete dash with the LCD and swap it out. I found mine on eBay... I think I paid in the neighborhood of $200... Now I have a spare speedo and tachometer along with the idiot lights.

I just checked and they have went up considerably. I guess due to the manufacturer not offering new ones. They now range from $350 to $450. There are a couple of LCD clusters for around $300 though.

The problem is that the radio uses a proprietary (and so far completely undocumented) serial protocol to drive the LCD display. Any aftermarket replacement would have to be able to decode and interpret that protocol, to display what is meant to be shown.

I'm beginning to REALLY hate that word.
