Change Speedo from MPH to KPH and replace radio facia

Postby MaltaBiker » Mon Aug 01, 2016 9:17 am

I have a 1991 Goldwing GL SE and the Speedo reads in MPH. It does have the KMP/H in smaller scale on an inner ring, but to be honest, these are hard to see when riding. Where I live, everything is in KMP/H so it is not that easy to get the speed limit right. The last year or so has seen an explosion in the use of speed cameras.

Is there any way I can replace the facia of the dial with a new one that reads KMP/H. I don't want to replace the whole clock just find some kind of Vinyl overlay I can just stick on.

It not a major issue, just sort of irritating. Does anyone know of someone who sells or can make these?

I was also thinking of replacing the facia of my radio has it was badly scratched by the previous owner, maybe some kind of vinyl overlay I just stick down.

I have looked for both of these but can't seem to find anything, closest I got was a KMP/H to MPH, just the opposite of what I need :(

First, welcome to the forum.
You can change out the dial faces with ones that read in KPH.
I found an interesting one on eBay here and have thought about getting something similar, but in MPH.
I like the look of the different pictures instead of the regular black & white.

As for the radio, I ordered one of these decals from Cyclemax to cover my faded radio top. Not sure where you could find one close to where you are, but they are available.

Thanks for the info. I may look at changing the clock facias to white from black to make them easier to see at night. I got flashed by a speed camera this morning as I came out of a tunnel here in Malta. Speed limit is 60 Km/h which by my calculation is just under 40 MPH, which is what I was doing but still got flashed :(

The radio decal looks good for 27 USD but at 51 USD for shipping something that would pop into a stiff envelope, I will continue to see if I can find one closer to home.

Thanks for the advice, very useful.

I also found shop in Norway http://lillerolfs.mamutweb.com/Shop/List/1500/16/1
I sent a question how to buy, selecting other country than norway seem to freeze the order/payment/shipping process.

Changing faces

Image

When removing needles with spoons, black part popped up first and then needles...

New faces are thinner than originals, had to remove needle support pins from old faces and with a tiny drop of superglue placed them to new faces pin holes.

Try this one. The cost of mailing the tacho might be cheaper over here in the EU. It's €4.50,- worldwide

I spent a delightful 10 days last year in Malta, driving a hire car around the islands. As far as I could tell, no one has a functioning speedometer there, and if they do they don't work!

If I were you, I would simply attach a sliver of black electrical tape to the speedo glass to indicate the principal speed limits (in KPH). Then ignore them like everyone else.

Were you going to change the odometer also so it reads kilometers instead of miles?
