GL1500 radio stopped working

Postby Bugmerc » Sat Aug 06, 2016 2:22 pm

So here is the background. I had the radio out and installed an aux wire a few weeks ago. It sort of worked, but I suspected a bad aux cable. Haven't really worried about it and have just been listening to the radio. That may or may not be related.
The radio started cutting out a couple weeks after that work. It wouldn't just go quiet, the radio station numbers and the line between the numbers and the clock would go away. The screen looked like the radio was turned off. It would come back on anywhere from a second to 20 seconds later. Then it stopped doing that for several days. Yesterday it did it again a few times then cut off and has not come back on. I have checked all the fuses including the 2 in the relay box, with an ohm meter. All are good. I took the radio out and on the smaller of the 3 plugs at the top of the radio, the one that seems to be power (black and red wires, among others) I have about 5 volts on the red wire when the key is turned on. I don't know what else to troubleshoot and of course my newly purchased manual is on my desk at my office.

Any help will be appreciated.

Chris

Quick upate. I guess it's been about 2 hours since I posted my question. The bike is still taken apart, radio is sitting face down on the frame where the seat would be, I walk into the garage and the radio is playing. The key was in acc position. So, I literally have not done anything to it and now it's playing, what gives???

Update #2

I was able to find the correct power wire, since my previous thought was wrong. I have about 11 volts on the green with black stripe going into the radio. With the ignition off, that power goes away. While sitting there with it, the radio stopped playing! I quickly measured the voltage on that wire and I still have power to the radio. So that means it is inside the radio. Anyone have any ideas now? Do I just send it to someone, who?

Thanks!

Chris

Never had a hiccup on my 1500, but I've had to send components of my GL1200's radio to Sierra Electronics in Troy, Ohio ..... always fast and very reasonable.
