GL1500, can a cigarette lighter be installed?

I have an '89 GL1500 & it does not have a cigarette lighter and would like to know if one can be installed, and if so, how difficult or easy it is to install. If one can be added, any suggestions about a brand/model that would work, & where to install it.

Thank you, Ken

Because I have an Aspencade, I have installed them in various locations that you can't because of your bike having more 'options' on it than mine.
I installed one where you foot heater control knob is located on the dash. Fairly tight spot to access it to make the connections on the rear of the lighter and is not all that protected when it rains. ....

I also have various outlets/controls on the blank panel where your CB is located. ....

One spot you can install one is inside your left fairing pocket, which would keep it far more protected from the elements. Just slip yoour hand in under the pocket cover to access it when needed.

Any Auto Parts staore will carry them. Just make note of which type you get so you get the correct burner insert when it's time to replace it

Thank you very much for your pictures, your post, and the advice. I might try to install it in the front left pouch as you suggested. What about the wiring, how do I wire it in so it doesn't cause any problems with the ignition or the battery?

There are a couple safe ways to do it, depending on what you want.
Option 1. Do you want this outlet to have power even when the ignition is off? Do you actually want to use a cigarette lighter in this outlet?
If yes to either of these questions, then I would install an inline fuse and connect directly to the battery.

Option 2. If you want to use this for normal accessories like a phone charger and you only want it to have power when the ignition is on, then I would connect to the acc terminals at the top of the fuse box and put the appropriate size fuse in the slot for the acc circuit. Here is a pic.

There are also other options like adding a power panel if you have a lot of other accessories you want to add.

Thank you for the information, it helped very much. I think I may add it as an accessory as you mentioned in option 2. So to be clear, all I have to do is attach the wires onto the posts at the top of the panel and install a fuse in the #13 slot? What size fuse, 10 amp?

The fuse size depends on what you plan on using it for.
For most accessories a 5 amp fuse is fine, but for a lighter, use the 10 amp.
