What dropped...?

Postby kane67 » Mon Aug 08, 2016 8:45 am

Yesterday I was driving highway +50km, exit the highway and slowed down to take turn.
When almost stopped using both brakes I heard clear sound like something dropped inside fairings.

But there's not much space really to drop, if I forgot tool somewhere etc?

Can't see anything on the road, stopped to look the bike, brakes ok, nothing missing what I can see.

Drove back home and took windshield, speedo and other upper plastics off. Took off lower fairing parts, brake covers... But no, can't find anything extra or missing part(s).

I think it had to be something in front wheel or brakes to hear such sound like dropping big bolt or socket...

Front tire could have kicked up a rock onto the plastic, would mimic that sound....

Yep, must be like you said.

I checked carefully brake pads, also brake cylinders have all bolts and nuts in place.

The windshield is adjustable... maybe it was not locked and it dropped.

Well, on saturday I modified it (cutting lower that I can see over when it is low position) so I thought maybe one of the w-shield's mounting part dropped but no, all were there. I was testing wind buffering, windshield down position...

Btw, interesting how wing feels "smaller" when you have short windshield... Optic illusion? :D

Every once in a while I have had a big fat June bug hit my helmet and sound like something like that, never feel it, but sure hear it. Happens on my 1200 with lower windshield, never on trike with taller shield.

Yesterday, south of Helena, Montana, I got my first clue it was starting to hail when it sounded like someone thumping my helmet with a ball peen hammer.
Fortunately it ended as soon as it started. There was nothing to get under!

Hummm... I have new tires since 2 months ago and once in a while (usually in a slight turn) I'll get a tossed rock that hits the fender inside. One rock went upward in front of me, and due to my 30-ish speed, I caught up to it and hit the fairing, seen it happen.

ANOTHER NOTE:
Am I the only one who is seeing birds getting closer & closer to the windshield as they fly across?

Yesterdays 50 mph road ride one bird seemed to enjoy the pressure wave the fairing made, was there for a moment.
While another came so close Deb thought it went tween the shield and me.

Hitchcock.... what did you teach them critters?

I am really good into my bike's care and panels, etc, et all... My last ride, I lost a right front fender panel, not one you usually hear about coming off... 70 bucks on Ebay to replace it... I did...

I recently had a damned BIG turkey just barely miss me!
We have a lot of these things around here lately and they
don't fly much. Mostly they seem to walk. There were a
a bunch of them walking across the road and one got spooked as
I approached. The dumb bird flew right at me. I could
have reached out and touched it's wing tip. My friends
riding behind me were amazed that I missed it.
Stupid turkeys!!

you see one with his wings spread right in front of

Lucky me them turkeys stay in the fields, way-way back in them fields. Tho I have seen them getting closer to the roads.
I'd hate to have a 25 pound Tom hit me at speed. Dropping a frozen 18 pounder on my foot was bad enough.

These various birds used to fly across my bow about 5 foot away but last couple years they're inching closer.
Could be some new initiation thing they're into?

OK, years ago but while riding across Canada on my 76 Honda 750 fully loaded..tent sleeping bag etc. etc. I was leaning back against the sleeping bag/sissy bar set up and a flock of sea gulls..yes sea gulls in the middle of Canada (just west of Moose Jaw a real place)....on the rode eating something I assume rose up as a group as I approached and one dripped it's wing and flew between me and my handle bars..no wind screen..I was tougher then. Scared the **** of me..well almost.

Hey Stuart, we're getting the bears here too.
I've seen a couple of them recently. I came around a curve in
Sussex County and there was one walking down the middle of
the road. He was in no hurry to move when I blew the horn either.
Big ones can easily weigh 600 pounds or more.
No way I want to hit that!

most of them that do that are mainly tourists. they don't realize that a mama bear WILL attack if she feels that her cubs are threatened or your too close to them, and they won't give up until either your dead or your running for your life and manage to get away.
