If it was my bike, I would buy a service manual for it and do the recommended 100,000 mile service on it.

The very first thing to do is check the oil level to see if any fuel and or coolant has leaked into the crankcase then change the oil before starting the bike. As for the carbs. ?? Yes, no, maybe, probably, maybe not. ?? There is no pat answer to that question. The suggestion of a 100k mile service is good. All fluids, coolant, brake and clutch fluids will need replacing. Tires sitting for 2 years will more than likely be starting to dry rot. The list is long.

I bought a 1996 Aspencade in February this year with 16,000 miles on it, the gas wasn't quit turned bad yet but the carbs were dirty. I ran Seafoam thru it for the first 7 or 8 tank fills with some improvement, but what really fixed the carb problem was replacing the the Intake standpipe sensor. Corrosion from the anti-freeze had got to the sensor, which is controlled by the ECM, after replacement it runs beautifully.
Smell your gas,if it smells bad drain and refill with fresh gas and try some Seafoam. I have also used One Shot from Amsoil with great results in cleaning up the green coating that ethanol leaves behind and removes the moisture from the tank. I would throw some fresh gas in it and go from there.
I bought the shop manual and went from one end of the bike to the other, repairing or replacing all the service related issues and some tips I learned here on this great site. Just got back from a 2000 mile Rocky Mountain motorcycle camping trip pulling a trailer. Awesome!

Would get the bad gas out and change timing belts to start off. Dont want to run whatever is left in the tank thru the carbs. Also time to check the tensioners. Well... like others said do the 100k service. :D

tk, if you'd like to read my rebuild threat (on that OTHER FORUM), you can get a pretty good idea of just about everything you might face with your 97 1500....

OK, so you've done all the above. IF you have ethanol related carb problems persisting, use Startron Starbrite. It cures ethanol related problems without having to rebuild the carbs. Having used the seafoam, if the Starbrite does not work then you will need to rebuild the carbs.

PS: Virgil is a survivor, he will be back

I would also include removing the shaft drive and check the condition of the splines and oil/dust seal. An easily missed maintenance item because it's not mentioned as part of the annual maintenance routine. My dust seal dry rotted overtime and caused the shaft splines to shred and I was over a 1000 miles from home. It's an easy item to take off, only four nuts, but a little more of a challenge to get back on. A lot of patience is needed. I check mine every year regardless of miles driven.
