Help!! I lost my right White panel today :(

Postby Sir Rides Alot » Wed Aug 24, 2016 11:01 am

I just recently purchased a 1996 1500 S.E. Goldwing and while riding today, the Right panel fell off somewhere along the highway. I went back and looked for an hour but couldn't find it. Would anyone have a used one for sale hopefully? The one I had was two toned, White with grey in the middle. :(

Yeah, those are a problem and not easy to find.
Keep checking on eBay for one and you might be able to find the right color.
If it comes down to it, you can always get a different color and have it painted, or go the chrome route like these or plain ones like these.
In the meantime, look into getting these to keep it from happening to any others.
Also check all of the grommets to make sure that they aren't old, hard or cracked. Possibly why the panel fell off.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

You could check the for sale section. There are parts listed and I thought I saw some white parts.

Thank you both. :)
I went ahead and went through my local Honda dealer panicking and they can get me one just like the original for around $350.00. Their first quote was for over $400.00 so $350.00 is a little better.
They say it will be in by this coming Friday or the beginning of next week. I am just sick over losing that side panel.

You might want to put the keepers on them so you don't lose any more. You probably should replace the grommets while you are at it since that cover is removed often for checking battery, and oil level. It's pretty easy to re-install that one after checking oil and not getting it on quite right so be careful to always make sure it is snapped back in properly. Sorry for your loss.

Maybe a lot of people have lost side covers. The grommets get old and dont hold as well. I installed new ones and rudys panel keepers just to be safe but I think just replacing the old grommets would have been more than enough. Its kind of hard to pull the covers off now. Honda sent out a tech bulletin to dealers with a method to remove the panels. I guess some of the posts were breaking off during service. It kind of boiled down to just make sure you try to pull it straight out and not on an angle. :D

You could have gotten that cover here for about $275 + shipping. That's including the 2 emblems that are sold separately. All-in-all, their $350 price isn't too bad from a dealer, assuming it includes those emblems. Their about $20 a piece. I replaced my grommets when I got the bike, and have never had an issue. They don't fall, or come off easily when the grommets are in good shape. I've actually had to silicone my grommets to ease the removal, so that the posts don't break....again. The previous owner apparently broke them, and did a pretty good job of repairing them. But with enough force, they will break. When ordering grommets, be sure to get the right ones for the positions you are replacing. There are a few varieties on that bike, and they are not interchangeable.

Tie them on. I used good cord, it's secured to the frame at front, comes out hole, runs along to rear and back through another hole, leave a 14-16" free end, knot, loop. In use wrap excess around something hidden and put a small bungie in place to hold snug. Then when need to remove, unhook bungie, pull excess back through rear hole, pull cover and let cord go in front hole and lay cover on seat.

I used black, it doesn't show in that recess ..... but I drew it as yellow to illustrate in case missed. The top side sits up under the seat. I use slightly different approach with my GL1200.

UPDATE:
I found it!! :D
I went back one....more....time looking along the side of the double highway where I lost it and there it was in the medium laying up-side down on freshly cut grass no-less. Talk about a miracle!!
I will more-than-likely purchase the "Keeper kit' mentioned on here so this can't happen again. :D

It's amazing that it wasn't damaged.
I suggest getting the full keeper kit.
It not only has two tethers for the side covers, but also for the rear pocket lids and front fender covers.

QUICK, PLAY LOTTO!

LOL! I agree. The odds of me finding my panel were very slim-to-none at best and for it to be still in PERFECT shape when found was indeed a MIRACLE. :D
Thank you all for your sympathy and then sharing in my celebration after finding it. Wow !! :)

Wow! Very lucky! Go get a few lottery tickets while your luck is holding up! One thing I do when riding alone is to flip up the passenger floorboard to help keep them in place just in case, but I also replaced all the rubber grommets and put in the keeper kits. Too bad I haven't been as diligent on certain other items, I think I just broke my driveshaft U-joint or driveshaft a few hours ago and a few hundred in flatbed tow costs! I'll be making a post on this soon, but glad you got your cover back!

Texas heat doesn't help them. I had one that would pop out at 70mph. Had to hold it with my leg until i could stop. New rubber grommets fixed it. Didn't know about the retention kits.

The Rudy's Keepers (I think are too expensive) BUT are a good investment.
I make mine but don't rely on a taped loop, I epoxy said loop onto the panels unseen backside. YA-ya, it hurts resale but loosing one panel costs much more than a slightly lower resale due to a custom 'X', that is, "IF" I sell.

ANY'WHO...
I'm kinda partial to Crystal Clear packing tape. A little paint thinner or brake cleaner removes the sticky residue, if any.
First clean the area spotless then use tweezers to put the tape on for that no fingerprint look.
Gloss tape over a gloss finish ya just can't see it. If air can't get under the panel, it's not popping off.... (she said).

;)
