CB audio input question...

Postby offcenter » Thu Aug 25, 2016 12:26 pm

Gentlemen,
On my '99 1500 SE...
The audio output from the CB is fed into the stereo/intercom unit. When a CB signal is detected, the stereo is muted and the CB signal takes precedence, right?
The question....
Where do I find the wires where the CB audio output is fed into the stereo?
I have a ham radio on the bike and I'd like to feed it's audio in at the
same point. I'd use a toggle switch to select either Ham or CB, since
I'd never be using both at the same time.

It seems like it would be a simple thing to do. I just need to know
where to do it.
Thanks guys.

Hopefully you can read this diagram from the Service Manual with wiring.

Thanks Chris, yes I can read it....but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I "expected" that audio from the CB would just be sent to the stereo
where the mute function would take place, and from there be passed
to either the speakers or headsets.
Instead, it "appears" that the CB unit sends out separate audio for
both the speakers and the headsets, along with some sort of mute
signal to the stereo.
Does anyone know if that is indeed what is happening?
I don't have a lot of understanding of electronic circuits.

Why do they always have to make things as complicated as
possible??
All I want to do is feed the audio from my ham radio into
the stereo IN PLACE OF the audio from the CB, and still
maintain the mute function.

I would suggest calling the guys at Sierra Electronics. They know a lot about the stero and CB equipment on our bikes. Hope that helps.

If all you want to do is hear the unit you can purchase a Hollsco Goldwing GPS Input, http://goldwingdocs.com/Store/Goldwing- ... -Input.asp
When this is set up properly this will act like a third person on the intercom and mute anything else coming into the headset.

Thanks Wayne, but that won't work. I wear a half helmet and I don't use the intercom.
I want the audio to come through the dashboard speakers, the same as
the CB does. And it says right there
that Hollsco unit only comes through the intercom.

The CB has both a speaker out and headset out, because you can switch between the two - ON the CB itself.

It also sends a mute signal (I don't know what the signal level is - you would have to measure it in operation to find out) that mutes the audio on the radio.

If all you want to do is send audio to the speakers, you can connect it to the "speaker out" line on the connector and ignore the headset out line. Hooking up the squelch will take a bit more work - you'll have to build some kind of interface so that when your HAM radio breaks squelch, it sends the proper mute signal to the GL1500 radio.
