Engine stops after filling up

Postby bikervern » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:37 pm

I have a 1989 GL1500 I live in Indiana, the last two times that I have filled up with fuel and then drive for about 15-20 miles the engine just stops. I wait for about 45 minutes and the engine will start and will run just fine until the next fill up. I ask my mechanic about this and he suggested that it might be a vapor lock due to the amount of heat and humidity, so I changed the gas cap upon his recommendation. It is still doing it. I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?? I also filled up at two different gas stations.

It's never happened to me but I will make one suggestion...Get a spare spark plug in hand and have access to one plug wire.
When it quits again, stick on the spare plug, lay it on metal and crank the engine.Verify if you still have spark.
There's only 2 possibilities...either you run out of fuel because the pump or vacuum valve quit.. or you run out of spark.
Find out what works.. isolate the problem area...test the problem area when it does not work.
This may require you to have a volt meter handy and the seat ready to lift off to get to the power wires for the fuel pump.
You seem to have a 45 minute window to test.
Locate your test points for spark and fuel pump power before you venture out again.

Thanks, I will try this. It just seems unusual that this won't happen again until I fill up. So it will run just fine for 130+ miles and won't stop and it only started the last couple of times that I filled up. I have owned this bike for two years now and no problems. You are correct though that when it stops, when I attempt to start it, it sounds like it is not getting any spark. After about 30 minutes it will then try to start, but after about 45 minutes it will start.
Thanks again for input.

I really am interested in this engine stopping problem. It's nice to learn these things just in case. I'll be nice to find out what the problem is. Thank all you guys.

Okay, the engine stop running again after about 95 miles. It would not start after 45 minutes or even after an hour. It was late at night, so we found a ride home and came and trouble shot it the next day. It still would not start. It would turn over nicely. I am not a mechanic, so we decided to tow the bike to the bike shop, which was about 30 miles away. We got about half way and we ended up calling a tow truck. The mechanic thought it was the starter module. After a lot of troubleshooting they finally found it to be the petcock valve was bad. The mechanic told me that it should have about 50 psi and when he pumped it up it would not hold the pressure, so he replaced the petcock and now the bike runs great. Thanks for all the input on this issue.

That would have had me scratching my head. Maybe I should order a kit and rebuild mine. Thanks for sharing that.

I believe that's the assembly in front of the gas cap. I just dropped my 98SE off at the shop because there is a puddle of gas in the tray under the petcock valve after about 5 minutes running.
I have a 4,000 mile trip I'm taking in 10 days......I don't need fuel problems during that.
I forgot to add that it keeps running even though it leaks......

The petcock I guess we never know went is going BAD or does anyone here know went is time to change the petcock. so we can rebuild or change to a new one before we are left down the road.

Hey guys. Just reading this post and have a little input. I just rebuilt my petcock valve and it is really easy. The big diaphragm had blown out causing an erratic idle. I also had a hard warm start problem. I found out my gas tank was not venting properly and caused too much pressure on the petcock valve. Got that problem fixed and now have a problem with kill switch. This is a great site with plenty of knowledge. Hope this helps, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I ordered a rebuild kit for my petcock valve and it came in the mail today. I plan on replacing the hose clamps too with the band kind that you screw to tighten. I do have a question. What was wrong that the fuel tank wasn't venting and how did you correct it? I have a 1994 Goldwing SE 1500.

Thanks
Frank

Guitarzan, See ya from Schererville. Use to live there for years before Florida. Is the picture in front O St. Mikes , ( guessing)?

Hey Frank, the gas cap on my 1990 appears to be a self venting cap. It does not have a vent hose coming out of the top. Apparently my self venting cap wasn't venting. I read a post on Goldwing Docs about the engine heat causing pressure to build in the gas tank when the trike/bike has been sitting for a while after a ride. They said it could build up enough pressure to blow out the petcock diaphragm, which is exactly what happened to me. Right now I just back the gas cap off if I am going to be while. The caps with the vent hose are really costly so I guess I will have to come up with a fix that is safe and works. Pay attention to how you petcock valves comes apart so you can put it back in the correct order. This a pic of the large diaphragm in the petcock valve. You can see where it blew out. Good luck, Charlie

Hey Charlie how are you today. I'm going to take a look at my gas cap and see how it looks. I haven't had any problem yet but I'm going to rebuild my petcock today and I'll be sure to take a lot of picture of it so I maybe wont mess up. Big maybe here. Lol

Well Mr. bohdan you have a good eye. Yes it is. I just had the bike all waxed and was out riding and thought I'd stop there and take a picture. Was a spare of the moment kind of thing. I wish I could find some other wing riders from around here. This is only my second year with a wing. How are things in Florida? I hope all is well and you're having the time of your life. Good wishes to you and yours.

Frank
