Postby greenen1 » Mon Aug 29, 2016 5:46 pm

Hi Guys this is my first post so let me know if Im doing wrong...anyway I have a 90 gl1500se with 77,000 recently replaced left head gasket for what I thought was a blown gasket only to find it was an oring on the water inlet tube I only use oem Honda parts. was riding Friday when suddenly heard a tapping in engine and oil light flashed on and off I pulled over asap and checked oil and found it was about 2 qts low I added 2 qts oil and fired bike up but the tapping sound was still there It does not sound like a rod or main bearing, seem to be coming from head any ideas.

Something very wrong for it to suck down 2 qts. oil and now the noise. Pop that valve cover and with cardboard placed to limit oil spray start it up and locate/see source of problem.
This is what I do

I am betting it is a lifter that has gone flat from lack of oil pressure due to low oil levels, it SHOULD go away after a few (10-25) miles. I would agree that the valve cover needs to be pulled off to check it out, just to be safe.

If it's a metallic, semi-high pitched tapping sound, it's highly probable it's a lifter. (Like U. Fester said)

Low on oil will inject air in those lifters. Most will bleed that air out quick but seems there's always one ornery one. Ride it.
Also it wouldn't hurt putting in a little MMO, no more than 1/2 qt., the stuffs a little on the thin side. (Marvel Mystery Oil)

IF that doesn't work in ohhhh 50-100 miles, give me a PM, I have another old mechanics trick. It involves no wrenching.

And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.

thanks for the advise guys, bike has always smoked a little at start up. i have not pulled valve cover yet but think you're right about the lifter i have changed the oil and filter and have ridden the bike about 20 to 30 miles after about 15 mins of riding the tapping goes away however after bike sat in garage overnight i started it the next morning and the sound was back. Do you think i need to pull all the lifters rebleed and reinstall? This is my first Goldwing always wanted one and i love this bike i appreciate all your replies.

No.
Perform the "Mechanic in a Can" :P before your next oil change. Put in a 1/4 bottle (4 ounces) of either SeaFoam or 'Marvel Mystery Oil' and ride several dozen miles.
Hopefully the stuff will dissolve whatever in in the lifters and move it to the filter. DO change the filter with the oil change.
Oil filters are cheap enough, change the filter a second time around 500 to 1,000 miles depending on how dirty the first filter is by hack sawing it open it to see. Open the pleats and look close.

Put the bike on it's center stand for a while and check for smoke. If there's little to none, plan on valve seal change. BUT it's not going to hurt anything is you leave the seals alone... UNLESS it gets worse.

FYI:
If you don't have either either SeaFoam or 'Marvel Mystery Oil' you can make it's equivalent. 4 parts transmission fluid and 1 part carb-cleaner. The carb-cleaner will dissipate rather quickly via engine heat but the trans fluid will keep working.
I've done this on a few of my old cars and trucks that were caked up and had fair to good results.

Don't let that be too long, tapping sound is metal to metal.
The longer the tapping the more likely the cam and/or associate parts will wear sooner.

No need to drain in 100 miles, run it the full 3,000 miles, no harm. It'll keep working "IF" there's any sludge in the lifters or elsewhere.
