89 1500 electrical problems

Postby Bruce.gcw » Tue Aug 30, 2016 1:26 pm

Hi all,
I'm in desperate need of some help. 1989 GL1500, 85K
I was on a ride, and while pulling out from a stop (getting on it pretty hard in 1st gear, ie redline) no problem, 2nd gear fine, after I shifted into 3rd it shut off as if you turned a switch. Coasted to a stop and started looking. Full electrical power to all lights, accessories, etc. When I hit the starter button, nothing happens. called roadside and got towed home.
Here's a quick summary of what I've done and found (or not found);
Checked all fuses, including main and fuse link-all good
Battery at 95%, charged to full-nothing
Bypassed BAS -nothing (BAS recall was completed)
Starter circuit, jumped across selonoid B-starter turns over perfectly-bike does not start- No Spark
After doing some reading on here I can't find the answer, but checked a few more things-
No power in or out of the engine stop switch
Does not appear to be any power at the ECM (nothing on the meter from the main 6 wire white plug)-ground checks ok

Not sure were to go from here. It does not make sense that it quit running, And something happened with the starting circuit unless it's all tied together somehow.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Bruce

Check or swap relay 6 in the relay box.

For what it's worth, I figured it out.
The lack of power to the ECM and engine stop switch seemed to be the key. It decided to just start checking for power, and while checking fuse #9, I decided to see what else in the fuse panel had power, and found #2 fuse was bad- a small crack that was hard to see.
problem solved, although I have not ferreted out exactly why it caused that set of problems.

Check the two terminals under the kill switch. Years and miles of vibration at the handlebars will make these become loose and then you lose ignition and fuel.

you didn't say if the green neutral lamp is lit when key is on. A dirty N/R switch will not allow bike to start. It is behind left side panel at base of N/R lever. Good luck. (N=neutral, R=reverse)

OK let's talk about that reverse switch . The last few times using reverse the bike will die and then not restart plentype of power lights , radio so I put on battery charge starts right up. So I think some kind of relay sticking. Rode Sunday with some harley guys notice the reverse handle wanted to see it work ,did the same thing backed up a little and it died and wouldn't start back up. They push it off ( you can just guess the hell I caught ) rode back to town thinking it would be ok. Stopped a car show ( some nice cages ) but same thing wouldn't start , another push. (More hell) made it home hit it with the charger has started every time since .Any thoughts ??
