1988 GL1500 Where the Neutral Diode and Clutch Diode

Postby pricedjohn » Sun Sep 04, 2016 5:48 pm

Hi I have a 1988 GL 1500 , I have just returned from a Trip to the Rockies , the bike ran great it has 83,000 miles on it and I have owned it for 9 months as it was too difficult to ship any of my bikes from UK for the period I am in USA, on the trip the neutral light came on as I see in a few posts very bright in neutral and dimmer in the other gears and the OD lights works fine, and there are no issues with engaging or using reverse, I have replaced the reverse switch the one by the dipstick no change, then the reverse switch by the lever on the LHS , no change, I have a new gear selector switch the one that goes behind the top engine cover , however before draining the oil and coolant, I connected it in and tested it and there is no change , OD light comes on as it is turned, then very bright when in neutral and then dim, so I see no point in dropping the oil and coolant at this point, I have located and tested the 5 Diodes that sit at the back of the bike they are all good, the bike does not have a reverse diode that later models have or if it has I cannot find it so my focus is now on the Neutral Diode and Clutch diode as both are in the electric diagrams however I cannot find them does anyone have a good picture of where they are, I have the air box off side fairing panels trunk off and RHS Side box off.

G'day "pricedjohn",

I have an 88 which I had to modify the wiring harness to suit my own needs.

the diodes you are after are wrapped up in the harness on the right side as in the pics below. Why hide them???

Best of luck, Peter.

Pete thanks I will reassemble the rear of the bike, and look for them why hide them is a good question not much I can say to that , the bike is great to ride but crap to work on and information on the 88 model is sparse which I find frustrating let see if I can find them

Now another issue I have the part number for the 2 P Diode 32146-SH3-003 DIODE ASSY. (2P) '88'89 but nowhere can I find the part number for the 3 P diode , in the parts manual or online if it is the clutch switch diode it is not like the one O find online , with this removed the bike runs with no Netral light put it back in and the problem returns, does anyone hav a part number for this diode ?

I am fairly certain what you are looking for is reference no. 2 here. Test your diode before ordering.

It may be however I cannot find that on the bike at all and the only reference I can find to this diode shows it on the RHS by the CDI unit .

I have located the PN I think 31720-MN5-003 DIODE, CONNECTOR - '88 it does not state 3P but partzilla site does however no longer available and CSNL site shows the alt to be 32147-SF1-003 32147-SF1-003 CONNECTOR (3P) which is available

I have tested the Diodes and unless I find any other it looks like the 3P one may be the issue , if the one you mention exists I cannot find it after 3 days of looking and stripping down the bike

Thanks for the reply

So for anyone who is interested and wants to fix this problem before shorting out what is probably a good gear sensor switch I recommend you find the 2 diodes , I have just fitted 32147-SF1-003 32147-SF1-003 CONNECTOR (3P) into the Orange connector shown in the picture and my problem is cured, the original part number was 31720-MN5-003 DIODE, CONNECTOR - '88 it does not state 3P but partzilla site does however no longer available and does recommend the alternative however CSNL does and it works , thanks CSNL, thanks Pete I would never have found them without your pictures

Rgds John
